Only Kindle Select books

This program, like Amazon's lending library, requires indie publishing authors to sell their titles exclusively on Amazon. As a indie publishing author I don't appreciate that. I do make most of my sales on Amazon for Kindle but I want my titles available in epub at other outlets as well.

Book stores still exist? Barnes and Noble is still around? Man, I really want to go pay $39.95 for a book when Amazon has it for $24.xx. Yeah, let's keep those book stores alive!

Your reaction is precisely what Amazon wants - they want you to buy books from them, forcing bookstores to lower prices and cut their bottom line, putting more pressure on publishers.

People focus so much on savings that they forget about where that overhead is going to. Can the publishers cut costs? Yes, absolutely, and they should. But they're the ones who take on the costs of getting physical books published, and they also pay authors - and their royalties are a hell of a lot better than the ones Amazon pays. Amazon also uses a lot of tactics on authors and publishers to get lower versions for the site, especially Kindle version of books.

I appreciate savings like any person, but just keep in mind the end motivation of the company you're purchasing from.

I have never been able to actually read the Song of Fire and Ice series for this reason.

Now we know that KU doesn't offer that series (along with the vast majority of popular authors and books). So you still have a better shot trying to get the ebook from the library.
