When are peoples' phones not powered on? And it doesn't have to be unlocked - just plugged in to charge, which is where my phone always is if it's not in my hand.

Echo is a solution to a problem Apple already solved.

----------

My iPhone is always either plugged in or in my hand, so that's not much of an issue...
But the mike on the phone is not set up for it and requires you having it connected to the charger which I guess for most people is in their bedroom. People often empty their pockets and just set everything aside.

Really the people trying to save apple solved this is grasping at straws. Simply put the iPhone and iPad lacks the hardware for this and yes requires you pulling your phone out for it. Different use cases.

so then in your case you don't buy it.

my phone is usually in some pocket somewhere. in addition as said many times before the iPhone's mic is not good enough to pick up your voice from several feet away. this is a problem if you want to use it handsfree. if the reviews are good i will buy it.

however my use case is more that it is a nice bluetooth speaker and i hope it is a good handsfree bluetooth system for my phone calls. now if amazon manages that this can run Skype handsfree without the need of a computer then this would be fantastic.

Yes, we all have phones that do this. But do we all have speakers that do this? You know, because this is a speaker. One that can be used by multiple members of the family, independent of the aforementioned phone.;):D

My phone has a speaker.

My young kids don't have phones. Echo would make a great kids toy.

Amazon isn't and never has had a goal of making money on the devices they sell... their goal is to make money on the content people buy to use on the devices, and that has worked well for them. Some devices sell at cost or a slight loss, the higher end models make a small profit.... but all these devices are tired into their own echo system right down to the App store. (Sounds familiar.... oh, hi Apple!) The only difference between Apple and Amazon is Apple won't put out a piece of hardware with less than a 40% return.

If you think Kindle Fires aren't selling with their price points starting at $99, you're wrong.

Amazon's never-ending losses come from other places:
1. R&D
2. They invest in new things always (cloud, devices, distribution, drones!, and subscriptions, etc.)
3. They discount and have small margins
4. Shipping kills them....
5. They are developing Prime services like music, instant, lending library... and these are a big investment such as making your own TV shows.)

If Amazon paused, and just kept everything as it is right now, they probably would turn a profit. How much money do you think they spent last year developing and testing product delivery by drone?????

And so this is also why wal-street mostly loves the stock even though it's never made money.... Amazon is constantly moving forward and ahead of rivals and quite innovative.

You can slam their tech products, but considering they only entered this space a few years ago, they've done quite well. Fire Phone is an Epic failure.... and I think it's the one device they didn't try to give away. If they had used the same business strategy with the Fire Phone, it wouldn't have been $199 on contract.... it would have been $199 unlocked or maybe even $99.

Um… wow. Nice rant? And I’m glad you agree that Amazon doesn’t try to make money with devices and that they try to push people to their web and content services for profit, but that it’s not working so well because they sell everything at cost and spend a fortune on R&D that’s never recouped, and that they’re taking losses and nobody’s quite sure what to make of their stock, and why were you phrasing everything like a rebuttal when you agreed with what I said?

I’m confused.

A Nice Bluetooth Speaker? Really?

my phone is usually in some pocket somewhere. in addition as said many times before the iPhone's mic is not good enough to pick up your voice from several feet away.

I tried it again last night from several feet away. Worked fine.

We have no idea how "nice" a Bluetooth speaker this is. We do know fine sounding stereo BT speakers are available from TDK, Harman/Kardon and others, often for half the price.

Has anyone received an invite and purchased one? I got my invite today and am debating whether or not to pull the trigger. Would love some feedback from those who may already have one.

I got my offer as well and just ordered it. I ordered to keep my place in line. Since it doesn't ship till Feb 15, I may still change my mind and cancel the order before it ships. If it's a decent Bluetooth speaker, it'll be worth it. I wish it was rechargeable though and didn't require a constant plugged in connection.

Ahh didn't realize it took so long to ship. I might do this as well.

Just received my invite its and placed an order. I'm interested in capturing some pcaps when it's in 'listen' mode to do some visualizations. Too bad it won't arrive until March.

I bought one. I got my invite fairly early and have had my Echo around a month. I was in the market for a Bluetooth speaker for my bedroom anyway, so I figured for that alone it was worth it. It is really a pretty good speaker for the size. I have the unlimited music subscription, so it's very nice just to call out what music I want to hear. I'm actually listening to Prime music now, which I never did before. The voice recognition is very good. It's much smaller than I expected. The features that can be controlled via voice have a lot of room for improvement. Not that they're bad now, just that there's a lot of potential.

I ordered one as well. Mines ships on April 15th

Can you post some pics of your setup?

Hopefully, with more companies offering virtual assistants, it will drive competiton further. Could force Apple to do more out of the box with Siri too.

Have had mine for one week and so far I like it a lot. Voice recognition from across the room is very good. I use it daily to listen to music and to answer my wife's various and constant trivia questions.

Alexa, how old is Susan Sarandon?

Sorry about the upside down picture. Posted from my iPhone and it showed up that way. Here it is right side up.

We've had an Alexa for some time now, and it works quite well. Overall it has better voice recognition from 15 feet than Siri from 12 inches. It integrates well with many other hardware devices which is a real plus.

Apple has potential here, but most other "new hardware" efforts have been just vapor so far. They are already 2 years behind Amazon.
