So although I have a 6900xt running nicely in the macOS side of things, I thought I would look for a decent windows card and with the current wild prices for nvidia cards, I ordered an Asrock Radeon RX 9070 Challenger 16GB GDDR6 PCI-Express Graphics Card as this card is about the fastest AMD gaming card (ok the XT version is 10% faster), and is short enough to fit inside a 7,1.

In addition it uses only 2 x 8 pin power connectors so along with my 6900xt, can be powered internally very easily(power draw is 220W). It’s also roughly equivalent to a rtx5070ti so has some power and this is more than enough for my gaming needs.

It retails for £530 in the UK so not a bad price either.

Will see how it goes but could make a quality silent gaming pc.

Based on Tom's Hardware Graphics Hierarchy charts, a 9070 will be a decent upgrade from a 6900XT in raster games. If ray tracing is involved, it will be a more substantial upgrade.

Note that the two cards do not appear on the same charts. The 9070 is on page 1, while the 6900XT is on page 2. Compare to reference cards that appear on both charts: For raster performance, your 6900XT is a bit below a 7800XT. For ray tracing, your 6900XT is comparable to an nVidia 4060Ti (or an RX 7900XTX).

Tbh the 6900xt will only be used for macOS going forward, I have the Samsung G95NC 57” curved monitor which supports 4k@240hz so will use the 9070 to run that under windows and will disable the 6900 under that environment.

It will work fine, you're better off getting like a 5080 though, DLSS is a godsend. Pricier for sure though. I'm thinking about turning the 7,1 into a Windows box with a 5080 and a KVM switch once I get a new Mac Studio with M5 Ultra.

So, installed the card and works like a charm. It’s in slot 3 while the 6900xt is in slot 1. I disabled the 6900xt under windows and am able to game at 240hz (though I may increase the resolution and do 120hz instead).

Fits perfectly and uses the last two 8-pin motherboard power connectors leaving 1 x 6pin connector spare. Also silent so no issues around noise.
