It's nice that people whose workflows rely on Core Image-based stuff are getting the 3870, but I'll stick with my 8800 GT.

So now does this mean this will be offered as a bto. When ordering from apple?

Crap, I was reedy to buy my mac pro and acd 4 weeks ago. Then I decided to wait for wwdc, just For this card. Since it looked like it might not come at all, I almost ordered today.

They need to upgrade the Nvidia to the 98xx series =(

Any idea when the updated MBPs will be available? I need a laptop.

HI Guys...

I have last years Mac Pro (quad core, July 2007). When I ordered, there was a bit of a bungle with the order and I ended up with 3 x standard graphic card when I wanted the ATI option.

I have been thinking of getting that old ATI card ... and now this new one is out.

Just to make sure (I don't know much about how these cards compare)... is this new card better than the older card? I am guessing it is - just want to make sure!

I use the mac pro for print design work - and occasionally for video work.

:)
Thanks in advance for all the advice
S

I wouldn't even bother...... I'm gonna go with two 3870's in cross fire under windows... so you get better performance in os x with one card, then even better gaming under windows with two..

Wow, I'm sold. When will these show up in the Apple Store?

Also, why doesn't this article show up on the barefeats mainpage? The latest article I can see is dated May 30th, 2008.

Are we going to have to worry about compatibility issues with software, or do they all work the same for everything? Sorry for the beyond dumb question, I'm about to pass out tired, and I don't know much about graphics cards.

And when I get this tired and skim, I read this:
256 core processor, 1 Terabyte of RAM, 1000 Terabyte Hard Drive, 1TB video card Mac Pro. See you in 15 years. :D
And my brain takes the "256 core process" and "1000 Terabyte Hard Drive" and comes up with "1000 Terabyte Hard core porn" before I do a double take.

I was about to be impressed, kabunaru :).

Not for ages. The last MBP update was such a pissy update that I'm thinking they're just trying to keep people going until MacWorld next year. I'd put all my money on then. It'll most likely be a whole new redesign (well you'd think, they've had this one for 3 years).

Yikes, Nvidia offers the 8800 GT? That's the big bad card behind the Mac Pro? I mean it's a great card and all, but what about the next gen. stuff?

Any idea if this will be quieter/louder than the current ATI HD 2600 in my 2008 Mac Pro? What about in terms of energy efficiency? Do graphics cards chow a significant amount of electricity?

Next week ATI will launch their new videocards HD 4870. What were they thinking? We have some leftover of the HD 3870, let's sell it at a high price to the mac users?

I have a quick question. :)
Why does AMD still call their graphics cards: "ATI Radeon"? Shouldn't it be: "AMD Radeon" now? Didn't AMD buy/acquire ATI?

Same reason that:

Pepsi sells Gatorade, the LA Dodgers aren't call the LA Foxes (owned by Murdoch/NewsCorp), and a million others.

ATI is a well-known brand of graphic cards. Change them to AMD and people might think less of them. It would also be confusing since I didn't recall that AMD owned ATI.

why is it there are not many posts in this thread, i expected over 100 post in the first hour.
Are u still asleep you lazy americans? :D

Is it just me or is that a commodity price with turn-key support?

I remember paying $1299 for semi-crippled graphics cards and being happy to get it!

Rocketman

P.S. Can I put 6 of them in one of those external PCIe boxes and use them as a world class co-processor under Snow Leopard? :) For less than the price of an upper end Mac . . . . . . . . . .

Prices drop considerable when AMD now generates fabbed cards with support for the UEFI and pre-existing PC Bios.

Seeing as AMD is a major member of the UEFI the big wait was Microsoft releasing Vista to support new Intel spec'd EFI firmware.

No ATI Displays 3D overrides panel then

I wish it could work on Tiger also...

AMD today announced the new ATI Radeon HD 3870 for Mac & PC Edition. AMD says the card is "designed exclusively for Apple's Mac Pro systems" and includes two dual-link DVI ports, 512 MB of GDDR4 graphics memory, and 320 stream processors.

...
Designed exclusively Mac Pros and available for PCs? I guess exclusivity isn't what it used to be.

Build to order option?

But will it be a build to order option or something that I'd need buy separately and install after buying my macpro?

You know, I think I read once that having over sixteen cores doesn't help anything.

Anyway, it'd be awesome if SLI and CrossFire were supported in OS X.
