I have AMD Radeon HD 7970 3072 MB running Mojave... the card is very loud especially playing back 2k video and rendering in Premiere... is this card generally that loud or is it time to change the thermal paste? I bought it used 4 years ago, and never changed the thermal paste before..
I have the XFX version. Flashed for EFI screens. It's currently resting in my drawer since I installed an RX580, but I'm considering going back to the 7970.
I don't use Premiere (I use FCPX) for my basic needs, but it's not particularly loud. In fact, it's lower middle in the noise department in my personal use experience. However I don't do anything demanding so that may be why.
Renewing the thermal compound is probably a good idea considering age, but it's hard to know if that will ease your noise pains. I would run an App and monitor thermals to get a better idea of what's actually going on. If you are having elevated heat issues then, noise is to be expected. Obviously, there is a chance that renewing the thermal compound may help.
You may need to upgrade your GPU if you are just overworking the one you have, and can't deal with the noise.
