American Bought X in Uk

Will an X bought from Apple in the US be carrier locked or are some models unlocked and could therefore be bought in US and work in U.K? I think the t mobile models used to be ok from memory but not sure if that’s still the case, may just be the sim free ones now which aren’t out yet.
