American Express today announced that you can now redeem Membership Rewards points when checking out with Apple Pay on the web and in apps on the iPhone and iPad.

When checking out with Apple Pay on iOS 18 or iPadOS 18 or later, tap on your eligible American Express card (Platinum, Gold, Green, and others) and select the Membership Rewards points option. You can use points to cover all or part of your purchase, with every 10,000 points redeemed through Apple Pay worth a $70 statement credit.

American Express points can be redeemed entirely within the Apple Pay checkout flow, with no need to open another app or complete additional steps.

This is literally the worst way to spend membership rewards points. 1 pt = $0.70
Yup. Horrible, they’re basically taking a .30 haircut on every point which adds up pretty quickly…. I’ll hold on to my points and redeem for travel so I can get the full value.

When you book travel through Amex with points for example 10,000pts = $100

I regularly transfer my Amex points to partner airlines like Air France KLM to score direct Europe-California business/first class flights for only 60k. Comes with legit premium lounge access, too. Those flights usually go for $6000.

That’s 10 cpp vs this Apple Pay redemption rate of 0.7 cpp!

You do have to hunt/plan around those rare points deals, but hasn’t been an issue for me.

Yeah, this is the right way to leverage points.

This conversion for Apple Pay is absolutely terrible.

Yep, this is how to properly use Amex points. The redemption rate is pretty terrible for just about anything else.

Having more features integrated in Apple Wallet is cool. Meanwhile Discover removed the feature to show balances and stuff in Wallet earlier this month. A downgrade in user experience.

There are worse options out there. 1 pt = 0.6 cent statement credit if you redeem for straight statement credit on any MR-earning card, 1 pt = 0.8 cent deposit if you have an Amex personal checking account, 1 pt = 1 cent deposit if you have an Amex business Platinum AND an Amex business checking account, or 1 pt = 1.1 cent deposit if you have the personal Schwab Platinum Amex

Haven’t had a discover card since 1993, when I got my AMEX card haha.
I had to get a Discover It as my first credit card 5 years ago. Back then I didn't have a credit score and was just getting into this scene, and the Discover one was easy as a starter credit card for approval. Not sure if I will keep it. Currently I use both this and the Apple Card. I may need a third credit card.
