I have been using a Pebble since the original kickstarter, and one of the things I really liked about it was that whenever my Amex card got charged I would get a notification on my Pebble (with associated vibration) via the Amex passbook.

Since I got my Apple watch, although I get the same Amex notifications, they don't arrive with an associated sound or taptic vibration so I only notice it when I see the red notification symbol on the watch the next time I happen to look at my watch. Is anyone else finding the same and if so is this simply a limitation of a passbook-based notification, or something that Amex would need to specifically code into the passbook?

Most of the time it is just a nice confirmation that a charge has gone through, but sometimes it is a nice heads up that something I have pre-ordered has now been charged and is likely to be on its way. Ironically it was my Pebble vibrating that first alerted me that my Apple Watch was about to ship!

You don't need a watch app to get a sound or taptic notification. Any notification you get on the phone should be able to be received on the watch whether you have a watch app or not. I get a taptic notification on my watch whenever I use my Amex.

In the Apple watch app, how do you have passbook configured? Is it set to mirror your phone or custom? If it's set to mirror your phone, then make sure you have sounds and vibrations enabled on your phone. If it's set to custom, then make sure you have notifications enabled.

Good tip. I was experiencing the same Passbook notification behaviour. I have vibration switched off on my iPhone, specifically because of the haptic notifications from the watch. Passbook was set to mirror the iPhone. Hopefully now that I have changed it I will get haptic notifications.
