My GS2 takes very decent photo's, both in and outdoors. It's 1080p is quite smooth, despite my shaky hands. I think the 4S is a good camera, but let's not call it some super revolutionary thing... Just my 2c, If you like I can post some images when I get home.

Fandroids are everywhere, they really need to say that theirs are better. Come on, do you guys earn money from visiting an APPLE community forums? Cause it doesn't came to me to try visiting an ANDROID community.

Holy crap, that is a detailed photo for a cell phone.

I agree, it is a good photo for a cell phone. The camera certainly is usable and the quality is pretty good for something that you will have with you at all times. I say good job.

Its what you would expect for a 2011 phone that costs as much as it does, nothing special.

The phone is $199, which is what most every other smart phone costs. And it is a good picture.

If I was home instead of in Afghanistan I would be buying this, almost solely on the basis for the camera. I love shooting with my iPhone. Home videos etc already look great in 720p. But since I won't be back until March, I'm just going to wait for the next iPhone since I know at least the camera won't go backwards in quality. I'm kind of glad I'm not home right now, because it makes it easier to decide whether I should get the 4s or not.

I agree with you and I thank you very much for your service.

At the end of the day, it's going to be used for Point and Shoot stills, and uploaded to Twitter/Facebook most likely. I for one love the camera upgrade. I have dedicated camera already, but it's nice to have a decent shooter on the go.

Did Apple mention the limitations on optical/digital zoom?

The new optics and sensor on the 4S are the only tempting things beckoning to me to upgrade. This picture, and the sample images on Apple's site, are very awesome.

8MP will make no difference to the image quality other than the files will be bigger and will allow you to blow them up to the size of roughly A4. The real difference will be the now, F2.4 aperture. Low light photos will be less noisy and of higher quality. This is really isn't a key selling point for the 4S. In my eyes, the key selling point is Siri, even then, they're pushing it.

how are they 'pushing it' ? Just curious to read what you have to say. Sure, ppl are upset it's not a complete redesign on the outside, but when the 4 was a massive hit for them, why mess with success? Oh and they've already sold 1 million of the 4S.

for me, the camera looks to be a huge improvement over that of my 3GS.

Siri, looks to be amazing. Its depth is not a concern overall, but if it does what i've read about well, it will save me time and that's worth it.

It does...sometimes.

Apple iPod touch with 0.7MP is mediocre at best. It would be miles better if it was 2 or 3 MP.

In the area of closer to 10MP and above, MP loses its value.

The poster to whom your responding specified "above 5 MP on a phone". You're taking him out of context.

10MP? It's all relative to sensor design and size.

I agree with Jason Beck. There's a lot more to consider than MP.

The camera is pretty good and the lens is improved, but the Camera app is still lacking. Until I can have more control over the settings (aperture, shutter speed, white balance), it won't replace my point-and-shoot--which can do all of those things.

Can you show a demo of your point and shoot making a phone call? How about playing angry birds? How about texting? Does it connect to exchange? How about step by step directions? Does siri work well on it? Does it instant upload to Facebook? Can you blog with your point and shoot? .. No? Well then I am not replacing my phone until your point and shoot can do all those things!

I don't think the post[er] you quoted was suggesting anything of the sort.

Simply that for him, the lack of additional image controls means the convenience and flexibility of the iPhone is less important vs. the better potential PQ of a P&S.

Personally, I'll take the iPhone, knowing a mid-range P&S could be better. For me it's super portability and convenience or I'll make the leap, carry our camera bag and one of the DSLRs.

:)

I'm sorry? All I said was that my phone takes decent 8MP shots, similar to what the iPhone does in response to all the APPLE fans saying that it blew the competition away. I even went so far as to say that the 4S has quite a good camera, which it does. Fandroids generally say things like "BOO!! APPLE SUCKS."

some actual bokeh going on from the front of the bill to the back lol

Um...what exactly do you think bokeh means? Because that statement makes no sense at all. Though technically you can call the out of focus blur in any picture bokeh, using it in that sense is blurring the term (pun intended).

Anyway, it looks pretty good for a cell phone cam, but I find it funny that people keep saying how good it is as a camera. Granted, I'm used to $2000+ optics on even more expensive bodies, but are people's standards of a good camera really that low?

So want to put up a couple of images... anyway to upload 8MP images from a computer?

Probably easiest to post to Flickr or a similar site that allows full quality and provide links. I don't think MR allows large file attachments, but then again I haven't tried.

To be fair, bokeh is a pretty hard term to describe to most as most people don't distinguish between a razor-thin depth of field vs. aesthetics in the blur. For most, it means "lots of blurring," instead of how pleasing the blurred area looks.

are people's standards of a good camera really that low?

I doubt it can be helped. We're talking about phones and the camera image quality usually isn't the top of criteria for phone shopping. Also these are very thin devices not using folded optics and I'm impressed they can do as well as they do now.

For most who are happy to carry compact cameras with 1/2.5" (or even smaller) sensors will be pretty happy with the new iPhone's camera. And it's blazing fast too.

Here's some photo's taken from my GS2, Some in low light-indoors, and one outdoors. There's been no editing or anything done to them. Unfortunately there's a little focus and motion blur because I have very unsteady hands.

In low light you'll notice that there's some noise on the images when you zoom in.

Here's an outdoor shot, to show some colours and things.

I'm way more interested in what's going on the with prop/motor (and a splash guard of some sort?) and a jet engine or something?

:)
