Hey gang, I want to share with you an amazing experience I just had.
The other day I was digging around in my shirt drawer and I guess I delved a little deeper than usual because I came across my old iPod Touch 6. I had chucked it in the drawer the day I acquired my first iPhone and forgotten all about it.
I charged its battery, fired it up and started playing with it. I was in for a series of shocks and surprises. The first was that works fine with the current version of iOS and (with the exception of those items which require telephone circuitry and a SIM card) runs is capable of running anything that works on a current iPhone.
The most interesting of which is Face Time. Like any other device which runs Face Time, it can send and receive phone calls as long as you have an iPhone tied into your wi-fi network (any such devices will of course share the same phone number with your iPhone, they also share your Address Book database). So you can use it just as you would an extension handset on a landline setup. Indeed, if you live in a large enough house or small enough business to make this an attractive solution, you could spot multiple ones wherever you want them.
Also, if you google for "iPod Touch Skype" you'll find some highly interesting reading.
I was so delighted with my Touch that I visited Amazon and grabbed one of those little cards you tape to the back of the case as a Qi receiver (get one made of plastic, avoid those El Cheapo Made in China paper ones), a silicone case to keep the card securely in place, and a nice inexpensive Qi transmitting cradle. You could use it as a desk clock or as a bedside alarm clock (if you're a deep sleeper you might want to use Bluetooth to hitch it up to an inexpensive speaker to amplify the alarm, Anker makes a great one for about $35). Or grab down the appropriate apps and use it as a t. v. / sound system remote in the den. The possibilities are endless.
Now here comes the truly amazing part, I've saved the best news for last. Although Apple keeps a low profile on this subject, the iPod Touch 6 is evidently still being manufactured, or at least it is available through the Apple Store at a price not too much north of two hundred dollars. Or you can pick one up for about half that amount from eBay. Given the astronomical prices of Apple's current iPhone offerings, this has to be one of the most insane bargains on the planet.
Only one caveat: please bear in mind I'm only talking about the iPod Touch 6. None of this works on earlier versions because they can't handle a sufficiently modern iOS to run FaceTime.
