I have a need for the opposite of Airplay mirroring. I usually use an Apple TV with stereo Homepods for listening to music. However I don't want the TV on all the time. It would be really useful if there was an app for the iPad that let me see the Apple TV display and control its function. A bit like the iPad Remote app but with the display added.
I realise that I can use Airplay to stream music to the Apple TV from the iPad but this stops when the iPad leaves the house.
I have not found an iPad app to do this. Maybe a developer is thinking about it?

I've long wanted the same thing: the ability to turn on/off the same screen on the iDevice when using the AppleTV for NON-video purposes. It is a GREAT music player... originally billed as an "iPod for your television."

Airplay is the way. And I've somewhat moved away from Airplaying to AppleTV, now preferring to Airplay to the Receiver between AppleTV and Television. It is connected to my best speakers and my "Zone 2" speakers. It also works with many music services and it's remote app lets me control those apps without needing the TV to be turned on.

If you don't have a receiver in your mix, you might want to add one, that includes the ability to connect to internet streaming services itself and also offers Airplay. Or we can keep hoping Apple will remember that AppleTV is a great music playing source too and develop a good way to use it like that without needing the TV.

One more option: if you have or go Receiver, consider pairing a Sonos Port with it... and let it take over for all music purposes. It works just fine with Apple Music and Airplay but also all other music services. The Sonos app will let you manage playback, etc on the iDevice instead of needing a television. Or if you like Port but don't want the Receiver, Sonos Amp brings it's own Receiver-like power. I'd argue for Receiver over Amp, so that both AppleTV, Port and any other audio/video source can all share the best speakers, but that's a good option for those wanting to keep it as simple as possible.

How would this be preferable to just using the iPad to stream music to the HomePods? Can the iPad not stream to two HomePods at once?

I know what the OP is after. I use my Apple TV to stream Apple Music through my AV Receiver. Using an iPad or iPhone to Airplay ties the device up to stream music. A remote app with the display streamed to an iPad sounds good.

I love Sonos stuff, I tried the Port instead of the Apple TV, but the sound quality is not as good, and it doesn't do spatial audio. I do have a Sonos Amp in another room and that is great for Apple Music.
