An app to stop the screen from rotating?

Is there an app that will stop the screen from rotating? I searched (or at least tried), and didn't find anything on this forum, and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The Kindle app has an icon that "locks" the screen rotation, and it would be great if there were some way to do this generally.

On iOS4 it's a feature of the firmware, just double tap on home button, swipe right and use the lock icon to lock/unlock.

On firmware < 4.0 you can't because no app can be developed to lock the screen orientation.
