Adobe and Apple have always been very closely tied. Strangely enough PS 64 bits will only be available for Windows...
Apple has no real chance in challenging PS since it has so many features. Some alternatives like Gimp, Pixelmator, etc, are trying but they are nowhere close to what even PS7 offered.
