I'd like to get an Apple Tv for my grandfather and load it up with his music. However he doesn't have a computer and I don't think he has an internet connection. Is it possible for me to load up the 160 GB HD at home with his music? And then bring it over to his house and have his media already on it?

It certainly is possible but not having a computer or even an internet connection pretty much defeats the purpose of the Apple TV. I'm pretty sure it would work though if that's all you wanted it to do.

Maybe something like a WD TV media player would be better?

You could load everything on it first. If the person is happy with whats on it then thats all that matters. But no internet connection would kinda make it limited. You would have to update it if they ever wanted more stuff. HAve to think about how often that would be.

don't really see a point to an apple TV with no way to download, might as well get an ipod.

It's for an old guy who wants to listen to music on his nice stereo, in his living room. I'd rather have him sit on his couch and browse his music library on his 46 inch 1080P TV, then to stare at an iPod.

You could load it up with content at whichever Mac/PC you want and have it simply be loaded with whatever content you want - so I think it would still be a good experience given you have some good content on it.

You can even find some on eBay hacked with 500GB or 750GB drives inside that run like a stock Apple TV

I had a week or so when my ATV was not connected to the network, so I was limited to localised content.
Even so, because all my music (30 GB) was on the ATV locally, it was fine, worked really well, and was a great way to access my music.

As long as you pre-load it with all he wants, it will be just great, until he wants to add more music, pictures or movies, then you will have to update it via a computer.
