An Apple TV revelation (to me at least!)

I finally figured out what I think has been a big part of my trouble with my :apple:TV. The network has been really weak since day 1. Prone to interference, etc... A few weeks after I installed Take 2 it went way downhill to the point that I was ready to chuck it.

Tonight I factory restored back to 1.0 and the problems persisted. Sync rate was super slow and it would freeze even streaming audio. So I simplified my network, removed the Airport Express, enabled .n on the Airport Extreme and still dog slow.

And that's when I figured it out. My :apple:TV has been sitting on top of my DVD player since I got it. The metal from the DVD player housing seems to be affecting the :apple:TV antenna enough to essentially kill it. I stuck about 3" of cardboard boxes between the DVD player and :apple:TV and it synced at a rate I would expect. I'll have to build something nicer or just find it another home.

Moral of the story. Avoid placing the :apple:TV directly on any conductive surface.

Hope this finally makes Take 2 usable for me.

Thats weird my :apple:TV has been sitting on top of my DVD player since the day I bought it. I have had zero issues with network connections or interference.

Your wireless link may be less marginal than mine. It's been there for a year and working most of the time.

    wireless interference

I agree that the apple tv is prone to wireless interference. I had to turn off wireless networking on my wii, which was sitting next to the apple tv, in order to reliably stream movies to mine. I wouldn't think a dvd player would have the same effect. But then again, I wouldn't think that networking on a second device (the wii) would interfere either.
