an entire row on my keyboard has stopped working

It's the row beginning wth qwerty. Luckily it's an external bluetooth keyboard (the one that uses AA batteries), and can therefore be replaced, but it is disconcerting. I'm using a USB keyboard right now.
What could cause this massive failure?
