So, I split my time pretty regularly between the U.S. and Canada, and up until recently, I was doing fine using a VPN to access my HBO Now subscription through my iPad when I'm north of the border, then airplaying it to my Apple TV.

Today, however, I logged on for the first time in about five months and found that I was getting the dreaded "An error occurred loading this content" message whenever I tried to throw the video up on the Apple TV. Every once in awhile I can get the thing to play properly, but it's not worth fighting with the thing for 20 minutes just to put on an episode of TV.

A quick search on the internet made me realize that apparently this is a thing that's been going on for years for some people, and that the issue seems to lie with the Apple TV's wifi connection and the iPad's VPN connection having different ISPs / DNS / etc. But if that's the case, why has it always worked for me up until this point? Surely something has changed somewhere? My setup is identical, my settings haven't changed, the VPN is the same one I've always used...

What gives? Have I just been tremendously lucky up until this point? Is this the new norm?

I was ready to throw my old Apple TV out the window, it was so incredibly unreliable. It could connect to the internet, but streaming anything was slow and incredibly reliable.

On a whim, I tried a Restore (or "Reset and Update"?) and it's been great since. If nothing else works, it's worth trying!

The dirty little secret is that Firestick, Apple Tv, WD tv and others have frequent problems connecting to wifi...I have a booster and I still have problems...Wifi is a very flawed technology at best.

This has been happening to me, routinely, but with very specific files. I record off-air TV with my computer, using EyeTV software. Up until recently, it's been working like a charm - record the show, compress it and place it in my iTunes library and I can watch it with AppleTV or download it to my iPad when I travel. BUT - in the last few months, my AppleTV 4 will not play FOX TV files - X Files and Gotham files. I get the 'Error Occurred...' message. Here's the weird thing - my AppleTV 3, on another TV, plays the files without a problem, as does my iPad when I load them onto it - but, if I try to Airplay the files in question - my AppleTV 4 won't play them. I get the spinning gear.
To me, this smacks of some kind of HDCP implemented by FoxTV and recognized by the AppleTV4...not a good sign for simple off-air recording.

Well, today I'm getting this download error with any downloads of previous purchases on my iPhone Xs Max, and iMac. Same with trying to update some apps, or trying to stream 9 out of 10 movies on my ATV 4K.

No idea what to do - I thought it had something to do with Apple's servers. I've rebooted the devices, signed out of iTunes and back.

Suggestions?

To me, a "restore" is only a quick-fix. But since the latest update i haven't found any purchases that won't play.

....(touch wood)
