I have an Thinkpad X60 work laptop, which is super light, really well made, small but bright 12" screen & a separate docking stn that contains the DVD unit, which I hardly use.

I also have a MBP again from work (I am in a pilot group testing them as possible corporate computers) so I can make reasonable comparisons between the two.

The MBP is sexy looking, the backlit keys are neat, the screen is excellent quality, I love the attention to detail (particularly the magnetic power cable), the operating system is to die for, it's fast & very stable, iLife is brilliant, Office for the mac is in my opinion better than the windows version and parallels software works reasonably well.

The X60 though is a real workhorse machine, if you travel as much as I do you really appreciate how light and easy it is to carry and crack open wherever you happen to be, plus the battery seems to last forever compared to the MBP. I just found carrying the MBP around quite awkward at times and eventually I left it in the office and simply transferred files to and from it and the X60, taking the X60 out on the road with me.

I think if Apple ever came out with a version of the old G4 12" that was really light and based on the intel platform that allowed parallels software/bootcamp, they would have a killer business machine. Even the MB's are surprisingly heavy in comparison to the X60

Until then the MBP is my office based machine, I use an iMac and PB 15" at home and I continue to travel with my X60.

I love that X60 without that station!!! that's portability... I had few years ago an X20 and it was wonderful.

And I hear ya on the macbooks. Quality control from Apple has been a freakin' joke lately.

what I am trying to make some people understand is that if you don't push companies to make better products you won't get what you expect for your money (hardly earned, by the way)...

People who loves Apple should be criticising all the time, don't let Apple to rest comfortably just because customers are happy whatever they provide them.

And I repeat... I LOVE MACS... ARRRGHHH!!!

BTW, probably you could explain to me what's the point about threads talking endlessly about if something (a mbp in this case) is going to be released this tuesday, the next one, or for thanksgiving day... threads with THOUSANDS of replies.... I guess you are right, there's no point.

So I would like to make an statement for everybody who kindly responded my thread:

I swear not to use a Windows machine ever again, in this life or coming ones, I swear not to talk anybody using a Gate's machine, even if they belong to my family and I PROCLAIM my unconditional loyalty to my God, Steve Jobs and St. Peter (the Woz), even if they try to cheat me with any device that hardly would pass any quality control (I was just thinking about the macbooks getting randomly shutdown, cof).

The point of the threads is this is a mac forum so people tend to post on here about mac stuff.

In regards to not using a windows machine again, I am currently typing this on a sony vaio running XP, I have a dual booting athlon running XP and Gentoo Linux, I have a notebook running ubuntu and numerous linux servers. I just dont bother coming on here to post about them - to me that would seem somewhat pointless. A bit like going to a bmw forum and posting about the fact I just bought an audi.

You bought a windows machine - good for you, may it bring you much joy and hapiness.

Ok, I am not trying even explaining anything else, that's REALLY POINTLESS.

close this thread :p

I have a "friend" who uses an X40 b/c he needs the windows compatibility a few times a year, and loves the small size b/c he is carrying it around all day.

Well, he managed to get himself some osx86 running on it, so now he has that ultraportable running OS X he's always wanted.

The only drawback is that he has to use an external USB wifi dongle, but that's a small price to pay for OS X on a Thinkpad.

I've read that when Steve Jobs came back to Apple, he had an IBM ThinkPad. Prior to him returning to Apple, his daughter wanted a PowerBook and he refused, calling them crap.

When he returned to Apple, he took his ThinkPad down to the PowerBook division and told them, "This is the kind of notebook we should be making!"

I've owned several ThinkPad notebooks, and I have to say i've always been impressed with the quality, construction, and durability of them.

Yes, the Apple notebooks are sleeker.. cooler looking.. but in my experience, they're just not all that durable.

Having a superior OS on your PowerBook doesn't mean a hill of beans if you can't get the damn thing to turn on, or it spends most of it's life on a shelf at the local Apple repair center.

Apple notebooks seem to be plauged with problems.. from the very common backlight switch problems in the iBook models, to the 'mooing' fans in the PowerBooks.. if Apple is serious about the 'portable' market, they need to get serious about the design, quality control, and durability.
