Wouldn't it be cool, if we could swipe up, from the bottom, in the exact same way that we currently swipe down(from the top), for the Notification Center, to bring up the multitasking tray?
I say this, because the Home button on my iPhone 4, is on its last legs.

Settings > General > Accessibility > Assistive Touch = on
    Settings > General > Accessibility > Triple-click Home = AssistiveTouch

The resulting "soft" Home button can also be double/triple-clicked. This function appears to be a lot faster/lag free for me on 5.0.1.

    Enjoy..

I've had every iPhone since the original and I've never had a problem with the home button.

Mine only works sometimes and this soft touch one seems to be good! Think I might use it for a while, give my home button a rest haha

Well I threw mine against the wall a few times so this seems to help :)

Me too. This is the first time it's happened. I guess 14 months of 4.0 multitasking is killing it.
The iPad has the 4 fingers up gesture. There needs to be some kind of solution for the iPhone.

Well, lucky you. I had two replacements of my 4 under warranty for the damn home button, with the third unit's home button failing out of warranty.

The way I got by until replacing the 4 with a 4S was using the Assistive Touch on-screen button. Annoying (kept having to flick it out of the way), but it worked.

Assistive Touch is ok and all, but it's not ideal.
A swipe up from the bottom would be perfect.

Its a goid idea. Though i suspect swiping up (with fewer than the four fingers than the iPad needs) could interfere with the app.

One idea I recently had was to just make the multitasking bar pop up as the Notification bar is slid down.

That's an excellent idea too, although space would be at a premium for the notifications.
