Because you value features over aesthetics.

As someone who has worked in/around the design industry for decades (and has had some personal design related recognition) I find the camera ring an attractive design element. To be clear, I didn't qualify my design sensibilities to pound my chest, only to illustrate, there are _some_ people (or, at least one :D) with a sense of aesthetics, that aren't bothered by it, and in fact, even like it :)

Just from a usability issue, I also tend not to place my phone on a hard, flat surface (since that's not really a terrific angle for use ...), I prop it up on a small mouse mat (so no CBW) or use a Joby with a phone bracket (which provides outstanding positioning).

Don't get me wrong, I totally get where you're coming from, but for me, I find the form and functionality are outstanding in this device. :)

On topic ...

The thing I've really enjoyed about my iPX over the last months (I was a preorder-er :D), is how seamlessly it provides me with the smart phone features I desire. The [physical] form factor makes it disappear in my pocket, the FID works without any effort, including auth'ing into services like DropBox, it's very fast so I don't have to wait between "I want to do A and I'm doing A", even things like CarPlay make the experience from listening to a Podcast at my desk, then in my car, a seamless UX. Other than that, I find the hardware terrific (camera, audio quality), integration terrific (from an "ecosystem" perspective), apps are obviously not an issue, as a developer I frequently use/review/code on different platforms, and there's nothing compelling for me to even slightly consider something else.

My husband needs an OtterBox case. I’ve only ever used the Apple silicone or leather cases/ another type of silicone case and I’ve never had an issue.

You can’t be as bad as my husband. These are all the phones he’s damaged:

iPhone 4- smashed screen and had water damage

Samsung Galaxy S3- Broke charging port twice.

Note 3- broke charging port and screen

S6 edge plus - smashed screen twice and damaged display. Broke charging port. Even wireless charging stopped working. Had the phone replaced twice under insurance. Eventually had it replaced under insurance to the S7 edge.

S7 edge- smashed screen.

Note 8- smashed screen and damaged display.

I’ve just discovered that he’s damaged his latest phone. Ridiculous. Now I’m going to have to arrange for it to be fixed because he won’t do it. He’ll wait until the phone becomes u unusable.

Even with his track record he moans about having to buy insurance ( I make him) and refuses to use a case. The note 8 is the first time I’ve managed to get him to use a case. It lasted 10 months with a case. Once he gets it fixed under insurance I’m going to buy him an OtterBox.

I do think he’d be better with an iPhone. I think the curved glass on the Samsung phones are more prone to breaking. Not that it’s anybody’s fault but his own. However I just think he’d have less chance of breaking an iPhone. At least on the front.

I've never owned an android cell phone but have own 2 kindle fire tablets and both of them the charging port went bad. I think it is the design of these which may be similar to the android charging ports. I thankfully haven't broken any phones but always have cases on them. He reminds me of my Pastor. I guess he has broken quite a few phones as well. Recently his iphone 8 took a trip from the church to his home on the back of his truck. He posted that his wife threatened him that if he broke another one he was going back to a flip phone. LOL

I don't use a case (iPhone X) and my phone is like new
And FWIW, the camera bump, notch, lack of headphone jack, etc. none of that bothers me in the least
And Face ID works great for me
Only thing that bothers me is the notch, but only when watching videos. This will be solved then the x plus comes out because the screen will be big enough not to need to stretch the video. However it’s a great phone.

Lol he’s been told he’s getting an OtterBox case and he’s accepted. I made mention of the amount of phones he’s broken and he said that this doesn’t help him as his phone is still broken.

I’m mostly office based too, it’s just a few times a week I’m away from my desk for testing or meetings. I am pretty clumsy and so are the kids though lol.
For me, it's mostly one specific person at work. She's broken my stuff before without trying. She's the kind of person who has no respect for personal boundaries and can trip over flat and level ground.

My phones and iPad are on very specific spots on my desk. If she breaks them there she will be paying for it.

I have never used an iPhone (5, 5s, 6, 6s, 7, 7 Plus) without a case. Until the X it has always been a black Apple leather case, yeah I know how boring. . With the X, I couldn’t pass up the “such deal” on a speck case at BB.

I also love my X, for all the reason already mentioned, I came from a 7 Plus and the size was a big factor. The finger print scanner always gave me trouble, the Face ID has been perfect so far.

The notch only bothers me when someone brings it up and then I start noticing it. For sure the pluses out number the notch issue for me.

I’m so jealous of the folks that use their phones caseless. I wish I could but I just can’t - too afraid of dropping it. I do opt for slim minimalist cases though.
