An offer you shouldn't refuse: 360 HD Player

From wiki:

The Xbox 360's add-on HD DVD is recognized on Macintosh computers running Mac OS 10.4, but support for UDF 2.5 does not exist for the platform. Standard DVDs and CDs can be read with the drive, but not HD DVDs. The beta version of Mac OS 10.5 "Leopard" includes Apple's UDF 2.5 driver.

I heard that people with Leopard were playing back high def discs with HD DVD and Blu-ray drives...

I don't know what the min computer specs will be though - anyone?

Has it been confirmed. The mac Tiger does indeed see the HD-DVD drive and it works with normal DVD's through DVD player, bur because DVD-Player on tiger doesnt support HD via a disc it doesnt play HD-DVD

Leopard DVD player was meant to introduce BluRay & HD-DVD support so in theory it should work a treat.

When my leopard arrives I'll give it a go :)

I really really hope this is so, but I can't find mention of it anywhere on the Leopard "300+ new features" list. You would think it'd be listed somewhere.

Hopefully I'm wrong.

Well ... Ummm ... this deal just got ridiculous. Apparently the 2 extra HD DVDs apply to ANY HD Media - like say ... Sopranos Season 6 Part 1 ($120) and Sopranos Season 6 Part 2 ($110) ... not just movies under $34.99. Not sure if this is a computer glitch or what (probably), but you can't beat this deal. They are practically giving away money right now. Everything should ring up just fine at the checkout as well - no manager needed...

~$530 of purchased items for $190...

:eek: Anyone wonna buy me one and ship it to the UK? ;)

Lordy!

I'm not into the Sopranos or stuff like that, but that would fetch a fair bit on eBay!

Does Mr. James join the next gen video club?

I have one, it's amazing, i got it on ebay with 5 HD movies (not the kinda crappy ones you get with the deal) i picked up 8 more since then and it works amazingly.
BTW did i say i paid 120 for it with the 5 dvds on ebay :)
anyone who has a 360 should get this, HD is amazing and once you do it up you can't go back to regular dvd without a fight!

OK Leopard installed. I'm just going to go and try plugging in my 360 HD-DVD... Keep your fingers crossed folks :D

Too bad Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica aren't out yet...

Update.....

My leopard was an UPGRADE over the top of 10.4 I realise this is not the best.

THe 360 HD-DVD player still shows up in system profiler, and DVD's still work.
It recognises the HD-DVD contents on the discs and even displays / mounts a suitable HD-DVD disc icon on the desktop...

BUT (in my case)

The menu bar icons suddenly begin to flicker on and off. DVD's still play but HD-DVD's do not. DVD player says no supported disc error... MMMM

So I am wondering if this is my glitchy install ? Has somthing gone awry from 10.4.10 ?

So I'm going to go and do a clean OS install and try it again. Will post back in what an hour or so after OSX.5 has installed.

OK Clean install, and the same thing happens. It's obviously a 10.5 still too new! bug...

It can see the disc, it can read the contents, but DVD player still wont play HD-DVD and the menu buttons still glitch.

Just downloading VLC to try that.

The DVD player in Leopard is supposed to support HD DVD and Blu-ray, but doesn't look like it's quite ready...

^ Yep it certainly isn't ready....

VLC doesn't work for what it's worth. Roll on 10.5.1 :)

Can Leopard (Just been out and got it btw :) ) run a HD film from a folder? Since DVD Player, in its awesomeness, can play ripped discs from the HDD.

The Leopard DVD player will NOT play HD DVD. There have been rumours flying around for over a year, but it didn't make the final release.

It remains to be seen whether support will appear in 10.5.1 or another update, possibly once Apple starts including drives with its systems.

"Apple is committed to both emerging high definition DVD standards—Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD. Apple is an active member of the DVD Forum which developed the HD DVD standard, and last month joined the Board of Directors of the Blu-ray Disc Association." - 17/4/05 … so hurry up and release some playback software!

Did a little research ... I don't think Leopard will be supporting HD DVDs anytime soon. The hoops that Apple would have to jump through to "lock down" the system while the HD content is being played would be too restrictive - Apple wouldn't want to do that. There was a big writeup on this stuff earlier about how Vista had to lock you out of so much stuff while playing HD content that it hints at the possibility that Apple will just ignore HD DVDs for now.

Doh! I was getting pretty excited as well...
