thats BS. the ipad air is destined to be outdated way fast with only 1gb ram. people are going to be itching to upgrade in just 6 months

Interesting....considering it's the fastest tab on the market right now with the deepest Eco system, lightest weight package with the longest battery life....and developers are still developing for the A5/512mb devices (the masses). We've got the iPad 4, mini, 2 and original. The Original iPad still works just fine for my 8 year old son's simple tasks.

Still stingy with the RAM apple. Wow, thanks for posting this. A solid update but now I am really unsure if I want to spend an extra $100 for the Air.

So...you're considering saving a C note by purchasing the iPad 2?

As always, a solid review from Anand. Has me almost thinking of waiting now as the iPad Air is basically a large screen iPhone 5S (which his review essentially confirmed).

Have you ever used an iPad? An iPhone? There is a 'large' difference. Pun. Intended. The cool thing is the iPad also comes with the option of almost a half million optimized tablet apps. I'm not sure how you inferred that from his review...but reading comprehension is definitely 'individual'

In summary, expect more app crashes with just 1GB, is this what you guys also got from the review?

Nope. Not at all. In fact, quite the opposite. I got from the review 'best option on the market. Fastest option...best display, best Eco system, phenomenal battery life, first 64bit tablet and improving performance with each 7.0X update'. There are several other things I garnered for the review too. But if all you got was what you said, you may try going back and re-reading it. It's an excellent review

1GB?! You've got to be kidding me. I was using another iPad and it barely saved my webpages with a few apps open. Not to mention the Air doesn't have Touch ID.

Not sure what 'another iPad' means. But yes...if you were using the original, it's starting to show its age. The second edition, fourth and mini are excellent performers. The '3' was a transition (retina) device without an SoC quite ready to power the graphics. The '4' is a massive jump in performance over the '3'.

iPhones are one of the most stolen items in the country (America). The touch ID was a big improvement for security on the iPhone. The iPad will get it but it's completely unnecessary at this point IMHO (& I've got the 5s)

There's something about the websites I visit and another apps I use that seems to cause low memory crashes all the time. Had it with my first iPad 2 so I upgraded to a 3. Had it with my 3. I'm now using the old 2 since I gave my husband my 3 (he needed the extra storage for movies and podcasts, he's overseas and has really, really bad wifi). Same low memory crashes.

I'm not sure if I want to pay that much on the off chance that the iPad Air will be better (I was planning on the 128 gb LTE version). I probably will get one and try it out. Hopefully if it can't handle it it will crash within my return period. If so, I'll get a Surface. I have a lot of $$ invested in the Apple ecosystem and have gifted all my old iPads to my grandkids so they FaceTime all the time. Guess they can use Skype if I get a Surface. Sure won't like not having access to my purchased TV series. D@mn!!!

I think you'll be impressed. I, too, owned the 3 and made the move to the 4 for both myself and our business. There's a tremendous difference between the 2/3 & 4. The A5 and A5x are completely different than the A6(x) chipset...as well as the A7. That said, if you do get a surface pro, you can always put iTunes on it!

Amazing how my year old Nexus 4 has more RAM than this week old tablet. Pathetic.

Android needs more RAM than iOS to maintain its fluidity. That said, the 5s and iPad Air truly lay waste to your Nex4 when it comes to 'actual' perfirmance.

IPad Air still lags and frame drops on iOS7. Ugggh

Not sure what you mean by 'lag' but dropping below 30fps on a fast transition or M/T pane isn't IMO 'Lag'. Again....if you were to have read the review, it's being slowly addressed with the point updates so far from Apple. Purely software related with the ground up re-write of iOS 7

if im paying 500 for a device i really wanted it had better be the top of the line product. this isnt me complaining about cores, or software its a literal integration of MEMORY in a computer. a lot of the 3gb ram devices like the note 3 can keep a TON of tabs on a browser open as well as game save-state. go on the surface 2 play a game pause it switch apps wait a couple minutes and go back and you will see it did not leave you back at the main menu u keep going right where u left off.

its almost 2014 man tablets need 2gb ram MINIMUM if its a 9 inch + device. i was okay with it on a mini retina as those users are consuers but for someone like me who is going to use the ipad for productivity apps i dont want any shortage of memory during something important.

I run the iPad 4 during shows with 4,000 folks + in the audience. Live. Never a glitch. Most people doing 'productive' tasks on their iPad aren't switching between games and their word docs or spread sheets. One can easily listen to music, take a call, send a text, look up locations all while on a call or typing a document without issue.

Why do I feel like NO ONE in this thread has actually used an iPad? 32 tracks on the new Air in GarageBand? That's absolutely amazing! These CPU scores rival the MBP from just 4/5 years ago. The graphic power is insane.....all the while maintaining its extraordinary all day battery life
Some of these comments are just plain silly

I'll be buying an iPad Air bright and early Friday morning... but no, it isn't wiping the floor with anything.

My Google Edition Galaxy S4 runs just as smooth as any iPhone 5S I've used.

I'm assuming here is where you'll say the A7 benchmarks higher than the Snapdragon 600 in my S4... yet when I tell you it had double the RAM of the iPhone 5S.. you'll say specs don't matter.

Android and iOS handle RAM in completely different ways. You know this. Especially if you're an Android fan lurking and responding to an iOS thread, right? There's still a thick layer of Java on top of that OS. Not so with iOS. It's been this way since day one. It's been this way with Apple computers as well. Apple is excellent at memory management in comparison to Windows and Android.

Specs aside....we represent less than a tenth of a percentage point of iPad users here at MR. NO other users have a clue about how much RAM is inside. They'll pick up the air. Be blown away by its form factor, weight and speed. By the way every app in the App Store works perfectly. And they'll enjoy the tablet for years to come. When they're done, they'll be able to recover 50% of the original purchase price and pick another up. Not a bad deal. It's tough to sell even a one year old 'droid tablet (I've got the Xoom and I've tried to sell it but have kept it due to complete lack of interest....this was when it was less than a year old )

Does ios 7 have compressed RAM like Mavericks? Apple may be thinking that they can get away with 1gb by compressing a third of it. Still, this should really have 2gb. There is no excuse not to. 1gb can just barely hack it on my iPad 3 (showing over 500mb used with no apps open).

iPad 3&4 have the same amount of RAM. But the performance differential is night and day. More RAM uses more power. Apple is adamant about maintaining battery life and balancing the power and needs of the development community. You don't have to restart an iPad 4 iPhone 5 or 5s to play infinity blade 3. It's the older devices with weaker SoCs. RAM is irrelevant

U guys gotta realize that apple is no innovative company no more.

So. Silly. Innovation is doubling performance year in and year out with the best displays, most responsive touchscreen, largest optimized Eco system and the ABILITY to continue to use less RAM packaged in a smaller package while maintaining battery life and increasing user enjoyment. NOT about adding RAM

success or not is question yet to be asked.

Stockholders wouldn't be so happy once Ipad air can't sell because customer are getting sick of apple stingy specs.

Again, there are less than .1% of the total iPad population that has a clue how much RAM is in the iPad. The Air will be the biggest selling iPad of all time...guaranteed

Seriously...the ONE chart from two or three dozen that Anand has serious questions about and mentions that real world perfirmance will have no impact on this study! Un. Real!
Did you look at the other 30 benchmarks where the 5s and Air dominate even the Google based Octane tests? Optimized for Google and Android?
LoL!

The game consoles run one game(app) at a time

Run asphalt 8 for a bit then see what u have still open

Anyway i dont even want an ipad had the first 3 and am over tablets in a big way now.
I think people who want to get the air and are disapointed with the ram are justified.
I am disapointed the 5s has 1gig, it realy could have done with more.

Do you have a 5s? I do...absolutely the opposite of disappointing. It's the best phone I've owned. And I own a Note 2 as well. If you're basing your entire tablet experience on the first three iPads, you have no idea what you're missing out on. None!

thats the kind of thing i was talking about. the 64 bit os takes up more space than before so multi tasking is being limited. you guys need to see how the note 3 multi tasks by drawing a box on your screen and filling it with whatever app you want. iPad can't do that and how many times have you had safari open and want to open the calculator app on top of it. yet people keep saying oh no its okay debs will only work with 1gb ram not more ext ect

its not about iOS needing less ram than android is about apple being fully ABLE to but not doing so , so that next model can get it and charge your or the "upgrade"

please defend the 2010 inclusion of 1gb ram tablet in late 2013 more people. PLEASE

It wasn't until 2012 Apple found the need to go from 512mb to 1GB of RAM. This isn't Android. And the Note 3? POS! That 3GB of RAM is necessary just to get TouchWiz to run decently. Seriously. Not a fan of the Notes. I've had the first two. Went to play with the 3 to consider the upgrade and never will I buy another skinned Android phone. Ever! I absolutely screwed up with those Note purchases. My original was finally replaced in April with the Note 2 because of all the issues I had with the original.
Many better choices on the market if you're looking for an Android handset.

My Note 3 was returned within 3 days, as the 5S ran circles around this device.

Apple (or even Microsoft) mobile products do not need 100 cores or 12 gigs of ram to run smoothly like android.

The ipad's browsing score and performance are rapidly approaching that of a desktop pc. In fact, is already faster and smoother at browsing than my 7 year old ($1.8K at the time) HP pavillion, even with Ubuntu.

I can leave a game and return to it where I left off on my iPhone 5 and iPad mini currently. I doubt the situation will be worse on the Air. Again iPad apps are designed to run on the iPad (normally 3 generations back). Also, I've had about 15 browser tabs open on my iPhone 5 without incident.

How many tabs on Safari do you guys have open to where it's crashing? the maximum number I can open on my iPhone 5 is 24 tabs, and it doesn't crash or reload pages. I haven't tried anything with multitasking.

That's because the iPhone 5 has a dinky 1136x640 Safari page including images (per tab) to store in memory when multitasking. The iPad Air has a whopping 2048x1536 (per tab) to store in memory.

So of course the iPad Air is going to be seriously hampered compared to the iPhone 5 given that the latter can store more in memory without coughing up a lung. That's why people are saying the Air needs at least 2GB.

Bet Apple never even thought to add 2GB RAM . . . they only plan to piss everyone off and give them terrible user experiences. Amount of RAM was probably a last minute after thought.

::troll gaze::

Serious question, though. Does the amount of RAM in a device impact battery life? And are there any benefits to the consumer for only including 1GB, e.g., cost, battery, space for battery, size etc.

Just wondering as I have no technical insight on this subject.

Well now that RAM Gate is off and running,

Safari crashes on me once every two days or so.
Big deal

If it increase to let's say, every day (or doubles), I'm going to return mine and wait until they update it; that's assuming it can be traced to memory issues.

No problemo

I believe AnandTech's review even mentioned additional RAM consumes more power.

64-bit apps consume 20-30% more ram than their 32-bit counter parts, it has less ram than the iPad 4 to maneuver on. Swipe from infinity blade 3 to mail, swipe to chrome to lookup something, swipe back to mail to answer... swipe back to the game... what, the game has to reload?!?

I guess maybe I am old school, but when playing a game on my windows desktop I will quit all other apps to make sure I don't get any slowdowns...I guess peoples expectations are different on mobile devices.
