I find it highly suspicious that the company that "suggests" this is the case in this article is one that wants to sell you a security solution. I am vary wary of articles sponsored by a company that just happen to be able to also sell you a solution to the concern raised in the article.

Dont know if true i always found apps that requested weird permissions lol some games i remember requested access to contacts and the phone etc

There are occasions of rogue apps. It's not new. Thankfully most can be avoided with common sense and make sure you don't keep installing any old guff from outside of playstore ...
