My friends Anmdroid phones always slow down.

Sometimes ill pick up their phones and unlock it to have their home screen hang for 3 seconds.... Then they tell me its because I went from portrait to landscape unlock.. should that really lag u up for 3 seconds?

They also have to keep their 3g and wifi turned off for most of the day to survive... They arent the most educated users and probably need to calibrate their batteries and stop data caching but I just feel like that shouldnt need to happen.

Im not a die hard apple fan(I hate macbooks) but for now I would say iphone.

Similar discussion going on at the Android Central Forums. I'll repost what I posted over there. I came from an iPhone 4 and switched to the EVO...

My phone is rooted with the Sprint Lover's custom ROM. A few things I miss about the iPhone are:

1. Superior Battery Life - Lets not kid ourselves, the battery life on the iPhone 4 is way better without any nonsense tweaks and imported batteries. I can go 15 hours of normal use without charging on my EVO. I can get through a few days on the iPhone 4 without charging.

2. World Phone Capability. I hope the next EVO is World Phone capable as I do a lot of international traveling. Thank god I have a Touch Pro 2 lying around.

3. Apps are still better on the iPhone. When do you think Rage will be on the Android platform and run that smooth? And when will we get real push notifications on the FaceBook app? There's a lot of crap applications on the iPhone, but the quality apps still get an edge over Android as of now. Even Google is building apps for the iPhone. The Google Voice app works great. HOWEVER, I definitely do notice that Android is catching up at a rapid pace.

4. Form Factor - Perfect size, perfect build quality and beautiful screen. Antenna and call quality? SUCKS

5. Integration into Everything - Works great with my Mac, iPad, and Windows 7 devices. Also a ton of accessories that are made specifically for the iPhone.

What I like about Evo / Android / Sprint

1. Notification System - iOS doesn't even come close to how well Android handles this. A big selling point for me.

2. FULLY CUSTOMIZABLE - Pretty self explanatory. I have my Evo setup how I want in terms of sound, icons, widgets and how their arranged. I can even load customized ROMS

3. Much more reliable Network! - Had so much dropped calls on the iPhone, stupid antenna issue on top of the already crappy network. No way to run a business with dropped calls and poor call quality.

4. Wireless '4G' WiFi Tethering - It's like carrying a MiFi device around. Comes in really handy when you need it. And when you can get 4G, it's freakin amazing. I've sent and received huge data files in places with no internet service and it's great.

5. Plans on Sprint are better in Value - $69.99+$10 and getting 27% discount for 450 minutes, unlimited data, text, and any mobile anytime with NW starting at 7?! To hell with AT&T

And the people complaining about lag and slowdown on the Android... I never experienced such a problem on the Evo or Incredible. I'm not sure about the Motorola Droid or Samsung Galaxy but my Evo is really snappy going from screen to screen and switching between applications. I'll probably get the iPhone when it goes to Verizon, hopefully it will be world phone capable!

My friends Anmdroid phones always slow down.

Comments like this are meaningless without telling us what phones and OS versions you're talking about.

For example, my development Samsung Intercept (cheap phone) can be slow at times. On the other hand, the Incredible is always fast and slick.

It's like saying "my iPhone is slow" without telling us it's an old one trying to run the first iOS 4.0. Or that it's jailbroken with something hot going on in the background.

Thanks!

My happiness was verified when my co worker got a Droid X. I asked him to try it out (this was after I had my iPhone). The first thing I tried doing was swiping the screen from right to left to get to the next screen over. The phone locked up for a good 5 seconds while it thought about what I was trying to do, and then went over to the next screen. The whole point of a touch screen is responsive touch controls. Android doesn't have that......at least not yet, or at least not 100%. Google still has some work to do.

What I never understand is how every iPhone fan can pick up an Android phone and complain that it is slow, jerky and unresponsive. However my Droid 2 is fast and smooth 95% of the time unless I start really piling on apps and get wild multi-tasking. To hear some iPhone fans talk about Android you would think the phones are unusable the minute you pick them up. You would also think that the iPhone runs 100% perfect 100% of the time and has never had any glitch since the day it was released.

Went from a 3GS to an HTC Desire running Android 2.2, now back with an iPhone 4.

Android has some nice features and I enjoyed my time trying it out, but the quality of the iPhone hardware and overall polish of the UI and apps makes it a much better device to me...

Had an iPhone 1G for a year and then switched to Sprint. I had been using all sorts of devices on their network before Android became available. I updated to the EVO on launch day. My comments will reflect my personal experince with the iPhone 1G I owned as well as the iPhone 4 which I have explored extensively at the Apple store.

iPhone Pros:

  • MUCH better apps. This is no contest both in quantity and quality.
  • Brighter and sharper screen (iPhone 4G)
  • Smaller form factor (all iPhones but especially the iPhone 4G).
  • I know some (many) will disagree but I enjoy how the device is so well integrated into iTunes with all content in one centralized location.
  • Far better photo and video camera quality.
  • Hardware build quality is superior. Both my original iPhone and particularly the 4G are built like tanks.
  • The Apple support system with local stores.

Android Pros:

  • MUCH better notification system.
  • Less restrictions on customizing your phone.
  • Vastly greater selection of devices available.
  • Available on all 4 major US carriers and many others internationally.
  • 4G network speeds available NOW.

With all that said I find myself wanting an iPhone 4G, even though I am perfectly happy with my EVO. If it comes to Verizon I would probably make the switch.

Sorry,
I should have said the Droid incredible, droid x, droid slider 1+2 are slow when unlocking.
Those are the ones ives experienced slowness on doucher.

I've experienced the same thing while unlocking with the exception of the Droid Incredible. To me the droid incredible is the fastest out of the box android phone on verizon.

For me, deciding on Android or iPhone in the US comes to this:

Is AT&T good where you live and at places that you are frequently at? Get an iPhone 4.

If AT&T isn't good, go with verizon and get an android. Just note that with Android, there's always a better phone coming out that will have the latest build of android while you have to wait a couple of months until the manufacturer of your phone releases the newer version of software. But there are ways around this by rooting your phone.

Your going to have to explain slow to me because I have been sitting here unlocking my D2 over and over and it doesn't appear to be slow. I slide the unlock over and the desktop appears. It does have a fade-in opposed to a flash-on, but I don't really see how this is a problem.

Lol. You'll never get an iphone fan-boy to be objective. When they say something is "slow" they mean it-didnt-unlock-or-load-that-thingy-up-instantaneously-like-magic.

I have used slow phones (Motorola RAZR, anyone?) and I have used very responsive phones. Neither the iphone4 nor the droid incredible or galaxy s or blackberry bold are noticeably any faster than one another for 90% of their uses.

You have to remember that you're on a macintosh forum and that Apple has been brainwashing these people for decades. Brainwashing them to pay extra for inferior hardware and marginalized software.

Things have changed now... macs use PC hardware and iPhone4 doesn't have the fastest processor, but pride and years of brainwashing do damage to their ability to see reason and use logic. They still claim that the mac/iphone is faster and yadda-yadda-yadda, etc.

There are reasons that ad agencies use psychologists, and the fan-boy phenomenon is a prime example of the fruits of their labor.

Agree with the 2G, but the iP4 and its all glass is a china doll and no where near as tough as the 2G.
Also on a Android you can hide App icons from the screen and put them in the dock using Launcher Pro where the dock slides left or right so that app will still be functional and hidin. iphone cant do this.

You can also (if you are rooted) Get custom ROMS of OS system like 2.2 and have more than one to choose from and there are Apps just for rooted phones. I have one that can remove ads from the free Apps which is real nice. Also allows me to take screen shots like i used to w/ my iPhone.

And yet losers like you spend all day here trolling, if you don't like Apple's products, WTF are you doing here??

I know this comment was not directed toward me, but just because someone chooses another brand of smart phone doesn't mean they don't like Apple products. Look at my signature line? See I have plenty of Apple products. I decided to go with a Droid for a couple of reasons. First, AT&T is pathetic here. The network is not reliable at all in my area. Why would I force myself to use something that does not work well just to use an iPhone? I know some people here will tell you that it is worth putting up with a poor network just to have an iPhone, but I don't feel the same way.

Second, I already have a couple different iOS products. Why does everything in my life have to be exactly the same? I like having a couple different platforms to use and experience. It makes life a little more interesting. I understand there are a lot of people here who feel you must either use all Apple or no Apple, but I don't feel that way. I enjoy my Droid 2 and I like having a physical keyboard. I also enjoy my Apple products. Both are good platforms.

To the OP:

I actually went in the other direction.

I've been into Android since the G1, that includes rooting and custom roms, etc.

I know it very very well. It does do some core things better than iOS does. As mentioned, Notifications and cloud syncing are two of the most noticeable things.

I left Android for iOS a couple of months ago for two core reasons as well.

1. Battery Life. There isn't a phone that runs Android that has NEAR the battery life of an iPhone 4. It just goes and goes and goes. I use my phone quite a bit, and quite frankly, I was tired of having to drop another 50-75 dollars to get comparable battery life via an extended battery (additionally it added so much heft, it became really tiresome)

2. Most of the functionality can be achieved via jailbreaks/hacks/apps. - Most of the functionality that I missed can be worked around via the means above. I have my phone just how I like it, it works, and I get about 95% of the functionality I was missing from Android. However, notifications REALLY need an overhaul on iOS. You can get them close to what's on Android, but it's still inferior.

All in all, I sacrificed some functionality for more utility. That's really what the difference is today. I'm not married to Apple, so I'd be willing to see what Android looks like 12 months from now, but as of today, I don't think you can find as complete as a package as what you can get from iOS and the iPhone 4.
