The Note 5 is the best smartphone ever made hardware wise. And I was a former Samsung hater. But Knox is a bear and I don't think you are ever going to get root on the Note 5. The good news is that Samsung has toned down Touchwiz some.

The Moto X Pure is a great phone and can be unlocked and rooted. The Droid Turbo 2 is a great phone too but you aren't going to get root on the Droid Turbo 2 any time soon if at all.

That mindset Samsung and Motorola are pushing is another reason why I'm considering the iPhone.

Hey OP, I think I understand your situation. Before this did you have any interest to try iPhone? If so, this is your chance! Maybe give it a chance and see how you like it. If you've always been an android guy and had little to no interest in trying iPhone, sell it and get yourself the phone you want! Keep us updated on your decision! good luck!

Huh? Not sure what you are talking about "mindset". I own these phones and speak from experience. I buy iPhones for my relatives b/c that is what they like but they don't know how to jb or o/w use their phones so I have to learn for them and then teach them. So I am very familiar with iOS.

But I prefer Android. And like I said, I own all of these phones. I was a Samsung hater after owning the GNex and the Note3, but the Note 5 is the best phone I have ever used hardware wise. It kicks the iPhone's ass in speed and performance, the display is to die for and the camera is great.

The Moto X is my daily driver. The software enhances my life/productivity in ways no other phone can compete.

Your response is just wierd to me.

I just meant the way Samsung and Motorola try to lock their flagships preventing you from tinkering with them is similar to what apple does.

I do have interest thats the issue lol. Thanks.

What I would miss immediately woud be led notifications not sure how you guys do it with being forced to wake screen up to view notifications, double tap the screen to wake it up, being able to download files/photos and then accessing them in their file directory and sharing it however I like. Oh and a back button, but I can get used to reaching for it. These are just stock features, not too crazy about the other features you can add by rooting and rom'ing. What I feel I would gain is a smooth working phone that doesnt crash and reboot often, make phone calls wihout bugs. All my social media reading, web browsing, would probaly do just as fine on the iphone with probably nicer apps. Longer batter life from what I hear.
LED Notifications
This is admittedly a less sexy option, but you can turn on the camera flash to blip. They also make cases that illuminate lightly with that blip. So no matter what orientation the phone is in, you will notice the light. This is limited to just one color, but you may be able to edit flash sequences (honestly I am unsure on this) so that may be something you look into. I honestly just set things to alert me that are important. This is texts, starred emails, and that is about it. I don't like every damn thing to alert me like I sometimes hear in the grocery store (or out and about in general). People getting tweets and what not and I am like, "do we really need to be notified when we are picking out our cheerios that we got tweeted?" Anyway... lol

Double Tap to Wake
There is nothing like this but there is a front button that IMO is effectively just as good, but different. FYI you won't get this in a jailbreak, so that is something to consider.

Downloads
This is going to depend on what/when and why you download. There are absolutely ways to download certain files through apps on the app store but you don't generally get access to them in the same way as you do on Android. Simple stuff that I need are photos and pdfs and those you can do all day on iOS. YYMV

Back Button
3D touch IMO takes care of this completely. In cases where swiping back doesn't suffice (some apps don't support that) you can quickly 3D touch to app switcher. IMO this is actually more convenient on iOS than Android, but it did take a bit of muscle memory reprogramming since it wasn't an action that I was used to on either platform.

We are all different, but your list of concerns wouldn't keep me from at least trying the platform, assuming I had some time to tinker before I had to return it. Really the only bullet point that would concern me is downloads since I have no idea how often and what you are downloading and moving around. I used to jailbreak for this functionality, though this was back in the day when simple things like photos couldn't even be emailed lol.

Motorola doesn't lock the Moto X Pure. Only the Droids are locked now.

Samsung is trying to compete with Apple and go after the business customer so that is why we have Knox.

That is very old information. It no longer applies nor is it relevant.

I've been using both Android and IOS since they were released circa 2007. From Android 4.x.x and up functionality out of the box (not rooted) is actually somewhat better than iOS since Android allows for easy open access to the file system. Stability Reliability and Speed are terrific benefits they share.

Both are excellent... That's why I use them.
It was very relevant to me. I'm a software engineer. I switched to ios in September after using symbian, maemo, then android for around last 5. Rooting was needed to examine wake locks for example... Essential to get to the bottom of ad hoc power drain... Also needed to better use sd cards which google made harder going to v4. Custom rooms needed at times due to taking over a year for oem to update os. I'd only consider nexus in future.

I'd dismissed ios for years.. Mostly with the toy size screens. The new plus models made it viable... And I escaped an eternal quest to get my android phone using power sensibly, being up to date, removed all that silly lag, and just working. I surprised myself... It was a big leap of faith but a good one for me.

I still use android on my tablet and there's many things I like about it. It's a good os still... And you seem very happy with it so why not sell/return and go for something like a nexus 6p

I didn't even open it up. I guess my main question is can I still jailbreak to ease transition or should I just return it because I'll never be able to adapt even with jailbreak? Opinions welcome :)

Most people don't need to j/b their iOS devices. Did it once and after I installed third party software my battery drained within hours. I just don't see the point changing a few icons and allowing questionable software onto your devices. You'll basically end up with malware like on Android

The nexus 6p from what I've been reading isn't up to par in quality as the iPhone
Having used both (including the latest 6S model), I highly disagree with that conclusion. It's very high quality.

users over there are going through their own bend-gate.
I'm not. You'd really have to make an effort to bend this thing ... or be an idiot.

And when I look for an android with high build quality I don't really find anything I like. I've done Samsung, LG, HTC phones and their build quality is ok nothing that feels as quality as iPhone imho.
The Nexus 6P looks and feels way better in build quality than any of those phones to me.

I'm not too crazy about having a whole bunch of widgets running my battery down.
Widgets don't weigh my battery down. My battery lasts all day with Marshmallow on this 6P, even with heavy use. And with Doze my battery lasts even longer when not in use. And you can pretty much customize how you want each and every app to behave on this phone. And since it's stock Android, it doesn't come pre-loaded with a bunch of carrier or brand crap from third-parties. So that makes it even faster. You just put what YOU want on it. It's pretty barebones stock.

Why don't you just try out the iPhone for a bit and see if you like it? That's the only way you're going to be able to make a decision. We can't make that decision for you. Both have their pros and cons.

You'll basically end up with malware like on Android
Lol what?

I would have to disagree. :D

My primary reason for jailbreaking is to remove the blinding white and unicorn puke color of the PlaySkool/Fisher Price inspired iOS 7, 8 or 9 (depending on which device I am using).

If you are comfortable with stock iOS though then that's great.

This is so true. I cannot fathom why Apple does not offer a dark theme. Activating my phone in the dark results in instant blindness.

Sigh!

This old argument.

Install stuff that is not compatible, install stuff that is from places you have no idea about and you will have problems.

Don't and you won't. Keep your device away from bad stuff and you won't have malware.

Not that Apple bothers to refute this argument, because letting it hang out there where the anti-jailbreakers latch on to it suits their purpose.

If I have to buy a locked down device, I would rather opt for iPhone instead of that spyware ridden Knox found on Samesung phones.

Your first sentence is completey accurate, most people don't need jailbreak, as is evidence of the fact that most do not jailbreak.

Everything else is kind of off though. Most apps on jailbroken devices are installed through Cydia. Cydia comes preloaded with trusted sources and bad sources get removed an flagged. Manually added questionable sources are also flagged and the user is given a warning before going further. Ultimately, it is still the user's choice. I should remind you that, although rare, some questionable apps have made it into Apple's own appstore as well.

The bottom line is you absolutely should take a moment and research what you are doing with jailbreak, but jailbreak doesn;t automatically equate to malware. We can look to iOS news for this, if we wish. You can bet that even macrumors would have a giant article about how jailbroken users had all of their private data stolen by means of malware injected through compromised devices. This simply isn't happening, no matter how much we keep repeating what Apple says about security. While apple's closed system IS about security, it is just as much about control, whether we want to admit it or not.
