Was wondering. On the home screen, Apple gives icons that are current-
Clock shows current time with second hand
    Calendar shows the date
Would it be to hard for them to link temperature to weather?
    Just asking

No. It's been done via jailbreaking since iOS 6. I had that and the clock and date a few years before Apple implemented it.

Maybe in the next version or so.

Of course, because of jailbreaking my temp is in the status bar all the time so it's less important to me, but it'd be nice to have it.

They might do it eventually, but personally I'm fine with checking the weather in one of these ways:
    • Looking out the window
    • Siri
    • Notification Centre
    • Apple Watch - on watch face

I'm sure there will be people who tell you that you don't need this feature and list a ton of reasons why. I'd still like to see it though. They've proven that they're willing to implement "live" app icons. A live weather one just makes sense. Hell, even if it was just the temperature and nothing else.

I know I'd find that more useful than the live Clock icon, seeing as the time is displayed literally everywhere via the status bar.

The difference with temperature is that unlike time or date/day temperature requires something outside the OS itself in order to display the information--basically data from somewhere and perhaps the use of location services, unlike time or date/day which just run off the OS once they are initially set basically.

Fahrenheit, as well as other apps that do similar things prove that it's possible and that there is a demand for it.

This was the first weather app I ever bought back in 2012 because I couldn't believe that the iPhone wouldn't display the temp on it's icon.

Even then, it's a workaround because the app has to display this as a badge not as a live icon.

Doesn't the clock on the iPhone "constantly correct itself" though? Also the clock automatically adjusts when you cross into different time zones, it's gotta be relying on location services somewhat as well.

Regardless, I don't see why it would be difficult to implement the temperature being displayed on the icon. My Apple Watch can display the temperature live at all times, I don't see why the iPhone's home screen wouldn't be able to.

There is sync that happens when it comes to the clock, but it would work just fine without it as well, even if it might be off a bit (not counting crossing time zones, which can still be manually adjusted in the settings).

I don't think it's about not being able to, it's more about Apple choosing not to, at least so far. What I pointed out are just some differences, as to how much of a role they might play, or whether or not they even play a role, when it comes to Apple is something no one outside of Apple really knows about, but they are differences that are there that might play a role in all of it.

Yeah, I see what you mean. It just boggles my mind how something so simple, and rather useful, hasn't been implemented yet. Not having update-able app icons just seems like a huge missed opportunity.

That used to annoy me back when the number was listed in iOS 6 and before. What does annoy me, though, is that the weather app is not available in the iPad (along with stocks). Why have they never added those missing apps?

I think it may be the same reason they used for not releasing a stock Calculator app for iPad. As far as I have heard, they said they couldn't make it good enough to take advantage of the display fully yet still look nice at the same time. Again, not confirmed, but I read that somewhere about a year ago.
