Animoji only sends as a sticker

Anyone else figure out how to send Animoji with a recorded message? When I’m sending them they only go as a sticker. I can’t even view the message on my phone.

Hit the red record button, record message, hit the button again. Press the send button (looks blue if iMessage is on for both of you). If you tap the emoji itself, it will only send a sticker.
