Anker announced a new series of products at CES this week, and most of them will begin rolling out to customers later in January. A few of these devices, including the Nano Docking Station and 45W Nano Charger, have pre-order discounts on Anker's website, and we're also tracking big discounts in Anker's New Year's sale.

Normally $39.99, early adopters of the 45W Nano Charger can get it for $29.99 this week with Anker's automatically applied coupon code. As of writing, all colors are in stock except for the orange option.

The new 45W Nano Charger features a Smart Display and a 180-degree foldable plug to ensure the display always faces where you want it to regardless of plug orientation. The accessory can also identify an iPhone model and provide the appropriate amount of power for fast charging while protecting battery health.

You can also get the new Nano Docking Station for the discounted price of $109.69 when pre-ordering, down from $149.99. This accessory includes a built-in removable hub so some features are available on-the-go. It supports three displays with up to a 4K resolution over DisplayPort and HDMI, and it offers 100W charging and 10Gb/s data transfer.

Two things:
  1. I don't need my charger to tell me "Hi" with a cutesy little face. A display on something like this is pointless and only adds cost for the consumer. A second USB-C port is infinitely more useful.
  2. You don't need your charger to identify which iPhone you have. The iPhone already completes the handshake with PD and requests the amount it needs to charge efficiently, using its built-in algorithms. This is marketing fluff.

Everyone is hating on these chargers. I love their products and their flashiness. Their chargers are small and work well. If they want to put screens on them, why not? They have chargers without the flashiness. It’s nice to see how much power your devices are pulling and to witness the device slow down the power draw as it becomes more full.

But but but... it is AI if it can tell one phone from the other, is it not?

I dunno WHY I want a little 45W charger with a screen...but I do.
On their site it looks like the little charger has a number of different status pages you can switch among, as well as a settable "care" feature, so it's not just a face saying hi.

On the other hand, I didn't see in a quick scan of the specs anything about PD 2 or 3 support, just the ability to recognize iPhones. So some of those features may not be available when charging other devices. Also, I'd have to think before gifting it (instead of a cheaper simple charger) to a non-techie friend or older relative, because navigating the extra screens may just confuse them.

oh no. they are putting the screen on the nano line also......
really don't like the idle power consumption.
Most if not all chargers are going to have a small power draw when left plugged in. Unplug them when not in use or stick them on a strip or outlet with a hard power switch.

I personally am very interested in knowing the charging wattage of my devices so I like the digital display.

However I’m going to pass on this as it doesn’t have AVS like the Apple 40W charger.

1) make the product more expensive
2) another thing to break
3) adds zero needed functionality
Everything breaks including our own joints. It’s an electronic item, there is always a case or cause of eventual failure even Apple products suffer a similar fate. It may add some interest or OCD functionality for some and it’s informative. Is it needed; no, is it novel and nice; yes. More expensive is debatable maybe $5-10 more maybe even less, compared to Apple charges it’s comparable if not less so who has inflated prices and not offering more *cough* Apple *cough*

The power draw is insignificant and it doesn’t stay on for longer than 30 seconds or less when something is active charging.
it's not significant, but it's usually double to triple the idle power consumption to chargers without a screen.

So why waste the energy.

If one is so concerned with the penny pinching amount of energy used, I don’t know what one would do seeing true waste.

The classic mountain out of a mole hill for the amount of energy used and cost. Many devices use stand-by energy if saving fractions of a penny or cent means that much to one’s budget then unplug it.

Yes, but I’m still using a charger from 4-5 years ago, I don’t need to upgrade or get a new charger every year. But as also mentioned, if they would do one of these with two USB-C ports, it would be an instant buy.

Sure, but adding complexity in the form of swiveling charge prongs and a bunch of electronics for a screen just adds more potential points of failure.
