This is one reason that I don't like these kinds of internet/cloud devices. We have no Siri/Alexa/Google speakers in the house, no internet-enabled camera, etc. We do have an internet enabled thermostat which is about the only item of this kind we have except....a weak spot in our system is we do have "Hey siri" turned on for the iPhones and iPads which, I suppose, is akin to having internet-enabled speakers. I have trusted Apple with privacy issues, but wonder if I need to rethink all of this...

Honestly when I got a couple of their cameras to try out and it wouldn’t let me set up straight through HomeKit (had to use their app first) I had my doubts about this.
I have just bought 4 cameras from Eufy, the eufyCam 2C, and were directly installed in Homekit via the bridge, no other app is necesary. I’m so happy with them.

There have been plenty of reports about cables, chargers and USB thumbdrives being used to inject malware over the years.
Yeah but that's not possible on modern devices, where you have to give consent before the port acts as anything but a charger.

Any HKSV out there that don't require the manufacture app for initial setup/install/continued use? Just buy the camera, use Apple's Home to set everything up?
Yes. I purchased the Logitech Circle View Doorbell from the Apple Store and it worked just using the Home application to set it up. It was very easy and worked like adding a smart plug to the network.

The only "smart home" tech I use are some switches and outlets. No cameras, no mics. A security system does not need to connect to the cloud.

I agree. While I might like the convenience of remote access, I don't think any manufacturer can be trusted. Those that aren't flat-out crooked are still careless and sloppy when it comes to data protection and security.

But note that even a switch our outlet from an unscrupulous vendor may still have a hidden mic or camera. Most of us aren't going to be interested in buying units to tear-down, so we have to rely on reviews from trusted sources, and there aren't a whole lot of them.

Block the IPs on your local firewall after you have brought them into HKSV. You'll still be able to view the feed in the Home app but the cameras won't be able to access the internet to sent data.

Sounds good, in theory, but in this case, the device is using Amazon AWS servers for cloud connectivity. If you block all of the AWS servers worldwide, you stand a good chance of breaking many other things, including web sites you may find yourself accessing.

For whatever it's worth, I can't recall a case of Apple lying to the public about their security/privacy policies. There have been bugs, some with serious consequences, but they were later fixed.

Which is a lot better than Facebook/Meta/Google/Amazon and others who have been caught flat-out lying to the public on various occasions.

Is there a way to get Eufy stuff in HomeKit though? I tried with Scrypted and found nada.

the eufy cameras i have (which are the little indoor ones with the AI subject tracking) can be enabled for homekit. you have to do this in the eufy app. they lose some functionality under homekit (lower resolution) but it's fine.

Why can't I find that option in my Eufy app. Maybe my camera doesn't work with it. I have the new smart lock from them with a camera on it. The Video Smart Lock.

Precisely why I block all direct network access at my router after setting up accessories with HomeKit. I’m sure Apple has it’s own leaky data issues though.

Depends on the model. Some have native Homekit support, some don't, and some are said to be coming (which I won't believe it till I see it).

I have my router to block the camera's IP from internet access. Although the Eufy app can't access the live feed, Homekit can. Without the app, you might lose some features, but it's a sacrifice I can take.

This is should be a major crime where corporate shields don’t protect you.
