I have an iMAC desktop running Maverick 10.9 and, within a couple of months, the playback on downloaded video developed an annoying echo which increases over time until the sound is unintelligible. Switching off the sound and then on again cures the problem, but only for 15 seconds before it starts again.
It's the same with headphones.

Can anyone advise please?

Anything from YouTube using the Mac audio and the iTube software.

It aso happens with CDs. I replay using iTUNES. Videos are replayed using Wondershare. I use both Apple internal play back and/or headphones. I also use Roland Duo Capture but reproduction is generally worse on that device. (Waste of Money!)

Something is going on that is not normal. Perhaps there is some audio capture software running that you forget about and it's picking up systems sounds. A telephone app? Some kind of recording app? If you have an echo then you have some kind of loop going
