Can anyone advise how to permanently get rid of this annoying tab, other than downloading the app...?

Using iOS 14.3 on iPhone 11.

you can't it's built into the site, just close it with the "x". Looks like you are in private mode so it won't remember your preference either.
 
I wish I was as lucky. Nothing makes my stomach turn as much as Google.
These are my settings for Safari. And the crazy thing is i have never seen that on my IOS devices but on my Android i do once in a while.

My settings are the same but it disappears if I set the search engine to anything but Google. Anyways, not a huge deal just annoying.
