looks like no annual upgrade for me on launch day

Spoke to EE and it has to be 12 months from your last device

So have to hope the new iPhone will be out in November. It’s only a month and a half but still...

Maybe ee, will change their position after the keynote.

Don’t think this only affects you.

That’s why I always buy outright with a sim only contract as it keeps me in control.
Can you not sell the phone and pay for the remaining months up front

I doubt very much that the demand for a £1000 plus phone will be any different to last year, I.E. not great. The carriers will have plenty of stock I’m sure.

You’ll just have to be patient if you can’t get it day one, but have to wait four weeks.

Sales suggest it was very much in demand, I don’t expect it to be any different this year. End of the day it’s an iPhone not a pixel or Samsung phone where not that many want one.

Except the iPhone X sold out last year.

There isn’t an iPhone 8 Plus this year to help curb demand.

iPhone X plus will be constrained this year, price be damned.

Why hope it doesn’t come out until November just because you’re not eligible for it until November? You’d be better off hoping it comes out in September so that the initial demand surge has fallen and stock levels recovered by the time you’re ready.

No it wasn’t, those are guesstimated sales by analysts. It won’t be the top selling phone by a long way due to price. The 6.1” is there to be the popular choice, not the one you want.
But if you have to wait you’ll have to wait. As someone already said you can buy yourself out of the contract, or did you have to pay £70 a month to get an iPhone X on contract because it is so expensive?

I trust analysts and carriers customer services on their word.

They sold out first batch very quickly. Luckily they had more stock coming in than the previous years after that but it was still hard to get on contract at the start

I agree that it won’t level out as the top seller, but there will be a big demand surge at launch for it because there’s a significant base of Plus fans who have held back for it.

The 7 Plus experienced worse stock shortage at launch than the standard sized model (although I think Apple later half admitted they’d underestimated the demand). Last year’s September stock levels of the 8-series aren’t really a good indicator as there were a lot of people either hanging on to 7 Plus models or waiting for the X.

If that’s what EE told you, which is better then some analyst, then who knows. This year you’ll have three new models, but as the other chap said lots of people who want the latest and greatest will be queuing up.
If you time it you could only have to pay for one additional months charge and buy yourself out? But then are you going to do the same next year?

And the manufactures said Apple had to half its orders for X components. They need to have more at the beginning and less later on.
I guess their will be lots of people wanting to spend lots on the new iPhones. In the beginning only though.

That’s the thing you can’t just pay the months payment as you would need to buyout The contract not one month so you’re looking at £950 odd right now

Obviously I will wait till November as I still get a phone each year just saying it’s a shame on the upgrade cycle being later than expected this year

Ah I see, that’s rather crazy. Are you sure?

I just have my sim only Tesco one, 1500 mins and 5000 text and 6gb I’d data, I only use the data really for music and browsing etc. I upgraded early too and bought out my previous contract for £30!!
Of course I then have to buy phones outright but it’s the cheapest option for me.
I had contracts for years, but with the way the market is now and my usage don’t really need to get a phone on one, especially an iPhone as I’ll be paying too much for it.

I look at EE now and then but they are a bit expensive for me. I was with them before and could get 4G at home but not now as they turned one of the transmitters off in between all the buyouts, T Mobile.. BT.. so left them, their data speeds are phenomenal!

Yeah that’s what they are saying as technically it’s a 24 month contract so upgrading after a year has to be 12 months to the day so 2nd November I can get the new phone and not a day sooner.

When I decided to go the annual upgrade route I thought even if the contract was 11 months you could just pay an extra months pay to make up for it but appears not. As I said not a huge deal just got to wait maybe 5 weeks after launch.

Obviously we all expect the plus X to be available end of September but guess we don’t know this for sure.

The problem with the annual upgrade plans is that you’re essentially stuck in a merrygoround of perpetually paying the highest price they charge and the only way to get off is to to suck up a loss by either buying it out or letting it run its full course - by which time you’d have paid £2000 for the phone and airtime/data.

I don’t know how it works for EE but when I worked for Vodafone, it was possible to manually bring a running contract into upgrade eligibility and charge the customer for the months they were skipping to do it. But it wasn’t advertised and was only generally done when the customer was trying to upgrade to a plan that was more profitable.

Was into December last year before the 256GB X became readily available. However I am referring to buying outright from Apple or John Lewis (for example), as I’ve been SIM only for 5 years so never take much notice of the Carrier (contract) stock levels.

That’s the thing about contracts as you are tied in and you will always remain in debt unless you buy the contract out or complete the contract and go to Sim only. Yes you get the latest phones a lot cheaper than paying out right but you are forever in debt with a higher monthly payment. That’s why I went sim only as I paid a big hit to start with for the phone but my monthly sim contract is very cheap and every year I can sell my phone and use the money plus for a few hundred more to get the latest phone.

This is the issue though to do that with the iPhone X you are still need to what £500 once you get payment of the old device. This is what I did each year and just didn’t want the hassle to do it so decided go with EE on contract. It’s not an issue as I get a lot of data and get stuff like BT sport free which is good. A high monthly payment isn’t a big deal for me as I don’t waste my money on weekends out or on cars or bikes like a lot of my friends do. Technology is my hobby and spend a crazy amount on it.

Just like I’m going to spend money on other Apple products like series 4 and the new iPad Pro and properly the air power too.

Agreed but the money that I save on a low cost sim only contract makes up most of the additional funds that I need plus a lot of contacts still need a down payment on a new phone as well as the £40, £50, £60 or whatever monthly payments

I can see minimum iPhone 11 Plus 256GB contracts being £1700 over 2 years or £1500 over 1 with say a £150 or £200 downpayment. They won’t be cheap by any means..

I’ve got to contact o2 and ask them if I can pay off what’s left to get to 12 months but I’ve been reading the terms and it seems as though it has to be 12 months too. I guess the only thing is that by the time November comes they should have stock of the phone we want. Getting an iphone on launch day on O2 is a nightmare.

Not worth buying the whole contract out for the sake of waiting a few months. I have £833 left to pay on mine. Would be £784 at the time of iphone pre orders. The whole point of me going on the yearly upgrade programme was so I didn’t have to keep buying the iPhone outright or buying out my contract just to start a new so I could get the iPhone on launch day so I’m trying to wait.

Same reason I stopped buying out right when they brought out the yearly upgrade plans. You can upgrade for free every year. I would pay for the data anyway and you get other perks. Selling your phone every year and taking a hit just seems like a waste and you have to go through the hassle of selling the phone as well.

My sim only deal is £20 a month and I get 20 gig of data and Apple Music and BT sport. That’s all I have to pay and I can replace the phone whenever I live without having to wait until the first 12 months are up.
Getting rid of the phone each year is easy as I just go to many stores that will buy your phone for cash . The money goes in to my account the next working day. Buying outright means I get an unlocked phone and can switch to another provider anytime I like so I am not tied in to one carrier. Last year I ditched O2 and moved to EE as they were the only provider offering LTE with the AW. Granted that I can’t move away from EE unless another provider offers LTE with the AW but looking at EE’s latest deals, paying nearly £80 a month for two years or £33 a month with £600 up front just seems like a lot.
I am not saying that there is a right or wrong way to do these things but buying outright suits me as it gives me more flexibility

I’m on the EE 12 month plan and your right they won’t budge on having it early. The only con is you have to give the phone you got on the plan back to EE or pay £250 when you upgrade. I opted to sell my phone for £380 payed EE £250 to upgrade so at least I had a few quid left over
