I just became one of the many people who have had their MBP (17") batteries begin to bulge like a pregnant women in their 2nd trimester! ;)

To Apple's credit (and AppleCare for that matter), I took it into the local Apple Store Genius bar and in 10 min's or so I was walking back out with a new (might be a refurb) battery. No charge! I was a little worried that the 15 month old battery wouldn't be covered based on some of the internet horror stories I've seen, especially since it had a little more than the 300 cycles that they cover for charging issues. But, the tech didn't even ask or plug it into anything. The physical warping and the fact that I'm covered by AppleCare was, apparently, all he needed to know.

"A+" on the customer service, Apple!

PS: Sorry for the low quality pic's - all I had on me was my MBP's built in camera.

I had a similar bulge to the one on your second picture but it was on the side of the button with the lights. My Apple Store replaced it without much fuss a couple of weeks ago.

The reason I wondered if it was a refurb was because he took it from a brown, mailable box; not a retail one. That could just be how replacement parts are packaged though. (I really don't care as long as it works like new.)
