Hoping for my thread not to meet the fate of someone elses, I have a question.

I just noticed the other day on my iPad that I have a dent in an odd place. It almost looks like it is supposed to be there so I thought I would ask. The little hole beside the headphone hole is dented in. It is a round dent that is centered around the hole. It's like the machine that punched the hole pushed too hard or something. I keep my iPad in a case and have had this one for a week. No drops, no bangs, no scratches etc. The only effect I see is the rubber on the edge of the glass is raised in that spot.

    That's the microphone.

I just checked mine and it looks somewhat dented... not badly, and it certainly looks intentional design-wise.

Strange - mine's completely flush with the surrounding surface.

Aha! So there might possibly be something to this huh. Well I'm not taking mine back. I am content with believing that apple only gave the dented ones to cool people. hee hee.

The first one I had had dead pixels but I never remember any dent on the mic.

Eww one of those "flush" people. Hope you don't forget to " flush " your toilet. It's obvious that dented mic ipads were Steve correct intention.

    * looks for pic of Steve holding mic dented iPad *

    Damn. :(

Have you used headphones with your iPad? It's always a possibility that you tried to shove them in the wrong hole, as for me Ive done it a couple times but it's easier because I have a belkin grip vue and there are two holes in the case about the same size, one for headphone and one for microphone
Though I haven't experienced any denting

    This is always possible.

I'm sure there are many times people have seen there are two holes right next to each other, and by accident tried to push there way into the smaller of the two holes, before realising it just won't fit.

Easily done in the dark, and you are just feeling you way around.

Remember you are only supposed to insert things into the one larger hole.

Trying to force into the adjacent smaller hole is bound to end up with something getting damaged.

Yeah I thought about that before posting this thread and I have not used my headphones with this iPad. I did with the dead pixel one. I also didn't see any scratches that may be cause by doing something like that. The dent is like the size of the end of a cigarette. It is perfectly round with it's deepest point being the tiny hole for the mic. I am not even sure I can humanly apply that much pressure to make such a small dent, well at least perfectly round without paint damage.

Is it conceivable Apple changed the design to improve mic performance?

Well what I was thinking is that the punch they used to make the hole pushed a little too hard around the hole and made a dent. With the hole being so small, it's easy for this to happen. I just hope my mic works which I have not tested yet. Any apps you can think of I can use to test the mic?

Might be worth posting a pic so others can compare - assuming you can get in that close!

Ok will try and take a pic a little later. It is hard to see though, only a few mm deep. I wouldn't have noticed it if i had not felt it then looked.

at least this guy isn't like a guy on the other thread that swears up and down that he did in no way shape or form dent the back of his ipad and thinks that it is a defect.

Now that i think about it I do think i remember hearing about a defective batch of ipads that slowly implode over time.

Well I am never dropped mine and I'm inclined to believe the other guy may have not dropped his. It's possible though that someone else did drop his. Mine has not been touched by anyone and I have to put it up when I'm done or my two year old will get it. I keep the room locked that it is stored in.

Anyway, something odd I noticed by that picture posted above is that it has a ring around the mic hole. Mine does no have that ring, it's just a hole. I wonder if the machine that makes that groove around the hole dented mine instead. In that case my iPad could be a rare one.

There is more than one way to get a dent. If the guy says he hasn't dropped it why wouldn't you believe him? It happened some other way. But no, it did not happen on it's own.

Though I'm pretty sure that they carved the entire body out of a single piece, as being a craftsman myself punching a hole wouldn't make anything that nice and would lead to other problems
However it does seem plausible that the drill went in too far and the arm holding the drill bit forced its way in either by carving, making a hole, or more likely just pushing in making a dent
Its possible that a computer malfunction caused many of these ipads to be made, and yours made it into a box before it was snatched off the line

I have a nice little dent on the back of my iPad (right under the Apple logo) and I have no idea how it got there. I did have a Marware sports shell convertible on it with the back faceplate removed. Strange since I would think it would take a pretty strong drop or bang to cause such a dent, certainly one that I would remember.

As a result I went out and got a more protective case, a Yoobao.
