Destinations tested: (Missouri-University of Missouri): I went to Dick's Sporting Goods, my gym, gas station, Work and Home.

Tested with: iPhone 3G - 16 Gig White.

    Interface: Above Average (8/10)
It looks beautiful and is very sleek, no extra stuff that you would deter from driving, just the essential but at the same time it's very well thought out. (except maybe the street names)

Negative: It takes on average 23-25 seconds to open on my 3G.

    Directions: Average (7/10)
The first time I used the "take me home" it took me to my nearest Blockbuster Video which is about 1.2 miles away from my home. When I re-started it, it took me home (the remaining 1.2 miles).
When I was going to the gym it took me to the right place visually but the voice assistance was telling me to do a U-Turn for no reason.
In another instance, the visual route had me driving in a lake instead of the road..

    *Update*

I'm noticing that Navigon is either using previous routes OR using a better routing system than the first days I had it. In other words, it's giving my preferred routes to places I've been before.

It still does give me weird routes to new places though.

    POIs: Average (7/10)
All the essential places are there like gas stations, food, etc... They are also marked with their respective logos (ie - McDonalds) on the map. Unfortunately it didn't have my gym or Dick's Sporting Goods (I used Macy's which was nearby as that destination). Also, as mentioned in other reviews, its very hard to see street names.

    GPS Signal: Very Good (8.5/10)
When I first opened this app, it wasn't getting any signal ANYWHERE but after a few restarts, it worked fine. It hasn't lost it's signal since so I am most optimistic about this.

    Music+Navigon Implementation: Excellent (9/10)
It's simple: Ipod runs in the background, Navigon runs in the foreground. Voice assistance will mix in with the music but you can adjust the volume of the voice assistance to where it blends perfectly. Only small, tiny, minor downside is that you cannot pick the voice assistance's accent/personality:p

    Things I would change/improve

-Automatically go into Day or Night mode with the time, depending on geographic location and time of year. ie - 6 am to 7:59 pm day mode, 8 pm to 5:59 night mode.
    -Improve POI's within your database.
-Add an option to pause audio when voice assistance is on.
-Add different voices/personalities to the voice assistance options.
-Export trip to text message or email option.
-Speed up the app's start, it takes roughly 25 seconds for me right now, which is unacceptable.
-Do not increase your price until you update your app substantially. I'd only pay $40 for it right now, sorry to be so harsh. ;)
-Make all updates free or you will drown in the competition. You have a good product with plenty of room for improvement and you beat Tom Tom to the punch but with the proper tweaks, you can stay ahead. The ball will be in your court again once Tom Tom is released.

Overall, I'd give this app 7.5/10 with a chance to move to a 8.5/10 with a few updates.

The big question is: is it worth the money? I'd say not yet to be quite honest, I will be updating this review as time passes but $70 is alot of money for an iPhone app.

FYI, I'm using the Canada Drive Safe system so the voice assistance goes through my speaker system (along with the Ipod app running music in the background). It works VERY well.

    *7/24 Update*
    Review Update:

    I found some more negatives:

-I have still been getting random "make U-Turn" directions.

-POI's are obviously getting worse, I went through a rather large shopping plaza today and Navigon's only POI was a gas station.

*Updated Rating from 7.0 to 7.5 as it's impressing me more and more with time*

Yeah, that's a lot for an app, but I wouldn't be so critical in the directions part of your review. My GPS, which costs much more than that makes mistakes all the time, but they are minor. Also, you didn't really test it enough IMO to make much of an assessment of the errors.

Blueprint: Can you make a comparison with G-Maps, particularly since your in Canada that would be interesting. $70 as compared to $20, that's a big difference.
And G-map is promising the sky in updates.
I would prefer to go with G-Map because I really can't see springing for a $70 app.

G-Map is currently at a "special introduction price" of $35. And that review (or promise) seemed like a dirty trick. I wonder how many new customers they got when they sent that demo in for review with the suggestion that potential customers cash in on their introduction price. Meanwhile, the update looked nothing like the demo and 2 new competitive GPS apps were released for North America. Shameless.

In reality, I have a stand alone Garmin Nuvi, and when I turn it one, by the time it boots up and locates the satellites to use, it's a good 60 to 90 seconds. 23-25 isn't really so bad!

I'm using the Canada Drive Safe System but I am living in the US. Sorry for any confusion.

    Review Update:

    I found some more negatives:

-Navigon drains my battery faster than it charges when hooked up to my cigarette lighter. My 20% remaining message showed up for no reason today.

-I have still been getting random "make U-Turn" directions.

-POI's are obviously getting worse, I went through a rather large shopping plaza today and Navigon's only POI was a gas station.

With regards to the battery problem thing, some chargers doesn't supply much needed power even by just using the default Map's app to track you while driving. So I can't really rely on the app for that reason unless a lot of people mentioned the same problem.

Thanks for the update, POI will be somewhat a buzz killer. I'd wait till Aug 14 probably.

I'm just worried about my cross country road trip, which is why I bought the app in the first place but if the power adapter can't supply it enough power, that's wack.

I have my iPhone hooked up to a Pioneer deck via USB and it actually charges while using Navigon. I went from ~65% to 84% after a 30 minute car ride. I also tested it with a Garmin iPhone charger, which also charged faster than Navigon drained.

I was also using iPod playback during this time.

I actually think that I didn't have my iphone plugged in properly and that's why it happened.

It did seem like something was wrong. I was thinking a defective charger or something.

My charger works fine as well.

Has anyone had a problem with the Voice Assistance only working when the Ipod is playing? I tried it without my Ipod App on and Navigon did not say any of the directions for that trip.

I thought I saw references in these forums to the fact that G-Maps released a video showing features in the update that aren't there.

I've seen a lot of comments here that the video was released regarding an forthcoming update but that update never came and missed whatever projection they had provided. There have been many comments that there are features in that video not presently available. I don't have G-Maps so I wouldn't know the difference between current and projected.

*updated rating from 7.0 to 7.5 - Reality View is AMAZING.*

I've also experienced some weird audio routing/configs.

Agree it looks great, just not accurate

I spent the $69 for this because of the rave reviews. I mean it is a lovely interface, but it simply does not route properly. I wish it did, but it doesn't.
I tried to get my money back from Apple and they told me to see Avigon. I did...two emails, neither of which I gottne an anwere to.

I made a two hour trip on Sunday with the charger connected. My battery stayed even while navigating with Navigon. Might be a good idea to turn the brightness down for trips that are over 30 minutes.

    Today I did another test:

I used a Google Address (Business Address) in Navigon but Navigon didn't recognize the address but Google Maps did.

That mount/charger does look good. My only concern would be that it might not get as good of a GPS signal since it isn't on the dash/windshield...

I emailed G-maps tech support about the possibility of having the ipod playing while the app is running like Navigon and got this response....

    Dear. Customer,
    Good evening.
My apologies to you not replying right away.
We are very sorry that we caused this problem and inconvenienced you.
V.1.3.1 doesn't play music while running app. we are working on adding it in next update.
You can update for free when update is ready.
    Thank you again
    Have a good day.
    Best regards,

So it looks like this might be implemented in the next version .... I'm sticking with G-Maps. So far it's worked great for me.

From my experience gps is either ON or OFF, and unless you are in a house or building it'll work fine. A mere 10 inches won't matter (or whatever the distance from you cigarette lighter to your windshield is).
