I tried to send the link to the solver page via the Firefox 'Send Link' command. Mail came up and I entered the To address and hit send.

Several minutes later I discovered that Mail apparently seized and after force quitting, and going back in to Mail, I discovered that the message wasn't sent...

Is this a Firefox issue or yet another Mail issue? Any others willing to test this?

Anyone with pre-3 Firefox wanna give it a try?

What does this have to do with MAPI? MAPI is a Microsoft API for programmatically accessing Windows mail clients. It's not relevant on a mac.

From your description of what happened, it sounds like you may have encountered a bug in Mail. Firefox had already successfully communicated with Mail to tell it to bring up the message window so it's not a Firefix problem.
