A geographical oddity
I just got the follwoing email from our IT department. I was a bit confused, since they have never sent out a mass email like this before. I really don't use Windows any more, and my work computer is apparently not having the conflict.

What confused me the most is that this sounds like a major issue (depending on how many "some" is) - how does it not get any news.
Q - I really thought about where to put this thread...I just wasn't sure....please forgive me!!
Dear Students,

A recent Windows XP security patch may conflict with some HP printers,
scanners, and cameras. The conflict causes one or more of the following
problems:

**You cannot access special folders such as "My Documents" or "My Pictures."

**Microsoft Office applications stop responding when you try to save or to
open Office files in the "My Documents" folder.

**Office files that are located in the "My Documents" folder cannot be
opened.

**If you open a file by clicking Open on the File menu, the application
stops responding.

**When you type an address in the Address box in Microsoft Internet Explorer
and you then press ENTER or you click Go, nothing happens.

**When you right-click a file and then click Send To, nothing happens.

**When you expand a folder in Windows Explorer, nothing happens.

**Some third-party applications stop responding when you open or save data
in the "My Documents" folder.

If you have recently experienced any of these problems, and you have an HP
printer, scanner or camera, please make sure you have backed up all your
important documents and go to the Control Panel, open Add or Remove
Programs, find the Microsoft entry "Security Update for Windows XP
(KB908531)" and uninstall the patch. More information is also included on
the problem at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/918165. This
page includes information on modifying the registry; please be aware that
modifying it incorrectly could cause serious problems that might require you
to reinstall your operating system.

If you have any questions about this, please do not hesitate to contact the
Information Technology Departmant at x65771 or infotech@law.umaryland.edu.
The Information Technology Department is located in room 248 in the law
school.

I'm not surprised! But it's not a problem for Windows itself HP got real sloppy with their drivers, particularly for inkjets and multifunction devices, like their scanner/printer combos and the like.
