(i do my heavy lifting, ie logic & final cut, on an imac; just mentioning).

got my M2 air yesterday, coming from a 2016 12”macbook. i loved that thing, my fave mac ever. small, light, sleek. and i loved (yes, i said it) the butterfly keyboard. no real issues with that macbook; did everything it needed to do. but seemed time to move forward, and into the silicon era. so, while i wait (fingers crossed) for a silicon 12” macbook, i got the M2 air. migrated all my data, installed my apps (all silicon ready; nice), and am back to work.

the screen is bright, clear, the speed is just amazing. and hasn’t gotten warm yet (the 12” macbook did, a lot).

the weight is nice. love the thin (but loved the minimal footprint of the 12” more). and i can run ventura (the 2016 12” mb only goes up to monterey). the battery life is incredible; i can just keep going all day, and not stress about it. and touch id is awesome, love having that.

it’s a great mac, am happy i went with it, will enjoy using it, and i will treat it well. well… until if/when a 12” silicon macbook shows up; then i trash the air 🤣
Count me in as one of those people who want an Apple Silicon 12" Macbook!

Yeah, I think there are lots of us who would instantly buy a smaller, lighter 12” MacBook.

In my case, the weight is key. I don’t care if it’s a smaller Mac mini, or a smaller MacBook, I need whatever weights less in order to be able to carry it between several locations. Unfortunately, the upcoming M2 Mac mini seems to be the same size, shape and weight than current one -if we believe most of the leakers-, so a smaller, lighter 12” MacBook could be the answer for me.

I wouldn’t count on a 12” MacBook. I think a 15” MacBook Air happens way before Apple considers going down in size. The iPad Pro is Apple’s answer to that, even though the iPad will never be half the multitasking beast of MacOS even with a lowly dual core 2016 Intel Ultra low power MacBook.

I will quit crying now before I go off on a rampage on how Apple cannot get the iPad Pro right for anything and I believe they need to let us run MacOS Apps on it if they’re not going to give us true multitasking.

the 12" is/was an exception design: just in terms of footprint, the keyboard, and that keyboard edge-to-edge (with speakers just behind the keys); love that look.

not counting on anything, i am happy with the air. but there are rumors of a coming 12" macbook, and am ready if & when that happens.

I really would like a 12” MacBook too but if Apple did produce one it wouldn’t be an instant buy for me. I’ve now come to rely on the performance of the MacBook Air and if the 12” wasn’t nearly up to the speed of the MBA I wouldn’t be able to buy it. In the past I could always just go back to my 2013 Mac Pro if I needed a performance boost but I don’t see myself switching back to a desktop again.

i won't judge it until i see it. if it's at least close to what this M2 air is, i'd probably go for it. but.... we'll see. i wll always have a desktop mac as well anyway...

other reviews are always great IMO! yes have a 12" too the family will never let go of! LOL!! This is the next best thing. What config. did you get?

I think the rumors came and went. Apple has seen success going bigger on everything. Now personally, I think it would be great to have 11,13, & 15” MacBook Airs. We know Apple cannot make an iPad Pro work at 11 or 13” for serious tasks or multitasking. Even their keyboard solution is worse than the MacBook Air in size and weight. And for such a worse user experience in most scenarios.

Nice review. Sorry I've not read all the responses but I wonder if you've considered comparing its heavy-lifting abilities against your iMac? You haven't said what iMac you own but certainly in terns of single-core the M2 wipes the floor with nearly every Mac that came before it.

it's a 2019 i7 imac (it's in my sig). both logic & FCP run beautifully on it (i only do music videos and short promos in FCP), so am fine with that. i like the setup of 2 macs, am good 👍

Yes. The 12” MacBook (with a “Magic Keyboard”) seems like the ideal design for the M3, which is likely to use TSMC’s 3nm node.
Exactly, I expect the new 3nm node SoCs to be much cooler than the M2, and that would make it a perfect candidate for the 12”.

However, I’m not sure Apple will finally release that format, they seem more interested on making their products bigger, like the rumored 15” MacBook Air or the 14” iPad Pro…

I would really like Apple to release a smaller MacBook to be honest

What specs did you get? I just ordered the base M2 Air (midnight). I’m more of a Mini user but wanted to try the Air especially with the $150 gift card.

I agree it would be great to have it, but I doubt they would ever make it now. I really want it to be without the "notch-design" language.

Congratulations! Badly want a 12" MacBook silicon too. I still have mine but it barely works anymore and sometimes won't turn on. Miss that size and weight - 12" has always been my favourite typing and screen size experience. I'm liking my M1 air, but struggling with the screen and low (for me) RAM. I'm tempted to get an M2 but I'm worried about the redesign with the squared edges. I literally can't use a pro because the edges touching my hands give me severe pain (nerve damage due to illness), and I'm scared now the air might do the same :/

I wonder how many people who are clamoring for a 12” MB ever owned one? You want one now but if it ever happened you would probably find the keyboard cramped, screen too small, limited ports, hefty price, and everything that comes with a small chassis. The 12” was a niche product and people constantly complained about not only the things I listed but how it wasn’t good for multitasking due to resolution/scaling.

Even now people are complaining about the MBA M2 and how you should spend the extra $$$ for the MBP 14”. There will be no MB 12” and the only rumors are just tech reviewers talking nostalgia. Go buy an iPad Air with keyboard and that’s your MB 12” cause MacOS sucked on that screen size anyway.

I hope you're wrong. I went through 3 12" macbooks over the years, after several windows ones. I have a 12.9" iPad pro and it isn't a patch on that lovely little MacBook in design or overall function despite the downsides. I accept your point of niche. but reading comments on these forums I think those of us who did/do have them love them.

As already stated, I had the 12” PowerBook G4, the 11” MacBook Air and was waiting for the 12” MacBook to be updated to place an order, but it was cancelled instead.

I’ve been waiting since 2017, and would order anything with a smaller footprint than a 13” MacBook Air instantly. (Unless I can run full macOS on an iPad, which is what I’d prefer.)

The people who complain about these machines are trying to use them as their only computer, not as a mobile-only device, which in the past has been a bit silly. However, considering how powerful the iPad Pro is now, I would probably not even need a more capable computer for desktop use. A monitor, mouse and keyboard would be sufficient.
