I'm buying a new Sony TV and I was wondering if I should update my 2015 Apple TV. I am thinking about it, but I get this feeling that the Android TV apps will more than suffice. I think the only reason I might have to update my Apple TV is to get a free year of Apple TV+

I upgraded my TV to a Sony X900F early last year. I thought I could stop using my Apple TV 4K I've had since 2017 and just use the built in Android apps.... failed miserably.

The android TV OS sucks, or perhaps it is more fair to say that the implementation of Android OS on Sony TVs sucks. It was unstable, caused the TV to crash frequently, caused issues with using a 2019-model Sony soundbar (HTX8500), wifi was finicky and unstable, and streaming, while it produced good picture quality, often buffered with frequent artifacts and pixelation on the image from the built in apps. Turned off wifi and started using the Sony as a "dumb" panel with apple TV 4K for streaming: all problems solved.

You may have a different experience but thought you should be aware of this.

OP, just buy a FireStick 4K and wait until the new Apple TV is released. It’s really not worth the money, at the moment.

I picked up a 65" 900F last Black friday for $1,000, and have found the apps work better than all my older streaming devices. I find I rarely ever fire up my old AppleTV or Roku. Guess I got a good one. The one missing streaming service is AppleTV+. Wish it had that..

I have two LG TVs, one a 2019 model with AirPlay and the Apple TV app, another a 2018 model that hasn't gotten either yet. While the webOS software is actually pretty good and the built-in streaming apps are also quite good, I just bought Apple TV 4Ks for each TV instead of continuing to wait for an updated model. I was supplementing the built-in apps with Roku for missing apps: HBO Now (still no HBO Max on Roku...), PBS, a couple others.

Now, everything I need is on my Apple TV and the integration with the  TV app is wonderful. I'm glad I didn't wait any longer.

I should clarify maybe: the problems started when I got a sound bar (Sony HTX8500). The TV and the internal apps worked fine without the soundbar.

But, if the TV is non functional and unstable using a soundbar via HDMI arc from the same manufacturer with "Bravia Sync" feature that is supposed to make them integrate perfectly I consider that a huge problem with the software.

I decided to go ahead with the Apple TV 4K. I was hearing some horror stories about mining data and stuff like that and I figured I'm getting a new set up might as well upgrade the Apple TV as well. I also am very familiar with Apple TV, unlike Android TV, and didn't really see the need to change.
