suppose my mac gets a virus and i have a total system failure. luckily i would have backed up all my files to my external hard drive using hard drive and when i fresh install my mac i would restore using time machine. my question is is it possible that when i restore from time machine that the virus could reappear if time machine backed it up as well?

Tumbleweed is right but, to answer your question, you can choose what date to restore from. Time Machine keeps backups daily so when you restore you get to choose when to restore from. Assuming you know the date where the issues started, you can just restore from before that date.

Again, don't worry about getting viruses though. Even if they did exist, they'd be easy to ignore.
