The anti-glare option was a direct result of the MR forum :p

Glad they listened!

strange that they would decide to change the color/look for just the matte. I agree that it looks better though - i wish i had it on my MB!

Same here. But you have to realize, the black bezel on the MacBook/MBP's is just painted onto the glass which is covering a glossy screen. All they did with the MBP 17" matte version was remove the glass, add a matte screen and put a silver bezel on it.

Do you think it'll continue to support the 30" display? Via the DisplayPort to DVI cable... Cause there's no mention of it only says 20" and 23"

I actually prefer the black over the silver bezel. Although it may not look as coherent with the rest of the system in black, I think the black bezel frames the display much better.

ahhh, very interesting. i did not know this - thanks for the info.

Hmmm.
Now does this mean the "Antiglare" option is identical to the matte screen they sold so far? i.e.:

- No glass at all (so is this 17" MBP even lighter to carry?)
- No dust particles potentially trapped between LCD and glass
- Same matte plastic layer on top of LCD as up until now on the matte screen

Is there a matte screen variant on the show floor?

All the pluses in the world are not enough for you. :D

If you can get the screen into a location where no light source is reflecting directly at you off the screen, glossy will have more accurate, less washed-out color.

 I don't get what your point is. I prefer glossy over matte in all lighting conditions I've seen. The matte people scream about reflections but I prefer this to a washed out milky white area on a matte screen. But to each their own.

As far as Apple's new option, I don't know what it is yet. I think assuming that anti-glare = matte is likely to be incorrect. If it's just a coating on the glass to reduce reflections without causing the diffusion that matte displays have, then it sounds good to me.

This is awesome!

I bought an MBP in October last year figuring that Apple won't give me this option on the 17... so I'm a bit dark about that.. but otherwise, it's fantastic. Looking at upgrading ASAP.

i wonder if anti glare and matte are the same, ive got a feeling theyre just recycling the cheap matte screens they used on the old early 2008 MBP

It's kind of worthless since the LED screen is so bright. There's virtually no glare. To say "for higher end customers" is silly IMO.

matte people scream about reflections?!!?! What!? Maybe low visibility when there is extreme light, otherwise the glare/reflections are all on the glossy.

but whatev', dont know where you got your info.

Just to clear up some stuff, this is not a "matte" option. It says anti-glare, which I'm assuming is different. The Apple Store also only lists it as an option on the 17-inch MBP, no the 15-inch models. I have to assume this will change, but that's not what the site says.

What is difference between matte and anti-glare?

The previous 17'' (before this unibody) had the anti-glare option which i use now and it's exactly what i'm looking for.

But is "matte" better or worse or just the same?

I mean the matte liking people scream about the glossy displays having reflections.

I like it better with the silver trim. Wish that option was available before though because now everyone will be going crazy on these forums.

And 8 hour battery life, wow.

It makes me wonder what would happen if they used the same technology/chem in a 15" model. Would we see something along the lines of 9 hours or 7 b/c it's smaller?

Apple Store indicates otherwise. Configure a 17" and click 'Learn more' under Display: "If you prefer a display with antiglare coating for a matte rather than glossy viewing experience, choose the antiglare widescreen display."

I asssume the cheap matte screen covers are quite a bit more expensive than a sheet of glass, but what do I know ? ;)

Various postings here suggest the antiglare model might be more or less like the earlier matte MBPs, the glass has appearantly been removed and a matte screen cover placed over the screen.

If that's correct, way to go Apple !
I don't care for the 17", but chances are the Rev.B 15" will have the matte option as well.

Charging extra is quite brazen, though...

To me, matte is just another term for anti-glare.

If I had to guess, the coating has been pre-applied to another piece of glass, and they just replace the existing one. So, since they have to add a different part, that costs more to manufacture, they're charging for it.

But what happens to the old, glossy part? (Recycled into repair stock?) ;)

As for there needing to charge for it in principle, meh... Apple chose to go with a glossy screen. Presumably, people who buy it are aware of this fact. Now an add-on option is available.

Cheaper and easier than trying to unload the computer, and get something else at least. ;)

Hopefully, it looks better than the add-on films available.
Perhaps someone who has experience with both will post something about this. :)
