In case you missed it, yesterday was Global Handwashing Day, which we here at Weird Science celebrated by leaving the home office and having a shower. In recognition of this momentous day, the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine did a bit of a survey of the hygiene of the locals, and came up with some disturbing results. Ninety-five percent of those polled said they washed their hands whenever possible (they would say that, though, wouldn't theyand what's with that other five percent?). But evidence suggests that either some of them are lying, or they aren't very effective washers, since 16 percent of their phones were found to be contaminated with a gut bacteria. Or, as the LSH&TM put it, "One in six mobile phones in the UK is contaminated with fecal bacteria." Happy, happy news.
