The version of ClamXav from the Mac App Store doesn't include the Sentry so it may be a better option if you are not going to use the feature anyway.

What are the differences between the version of ClamXav available to download here and the version on the Mac App Store?

- The App Store version doesn't contain ClamXav Sentry, so it is not able to watch your computer for new files and scan them as they arrive.
- There is no engine installation phase as the App Store requirements stipulate that everything must be self-contained within the app.
- Virus definition updates are downloaded on a per-user basis.
- Updates to the ClamXav app itself are taken care of via the Mac App Store.
- Mac OS X 10.6 or greater is required.

lol at people that don't get AV for there new $1000+ mac. i would recommend clamxav (free) or if you want to pay get virus barrier.

It's simple. People say you mac's don't get viruses. But if you buy a million dollar watch that people say is unbreakable, would you through it at the ground continuously? of coarse not. It is better to get an anti virus like virus barrier or if you don't want to pay clamxav and run it. If it doesn't pick up viruses Good. it is better then having none altogether.

Or Sophos Antivirus.

Note that these do keep an eye out for trojans, but what was said earlier is accurate: No "viruses" per se, and all trojans can be avoided if a little common sense is applied. But these apps WILL help in the case any of us has a "human moment" and clicks on something erroneously.

One can never have too much security, even in the best of times.

No offense but its clear by your post that you don't know much about viruses. You have to look at how OSX is built, and what it is built upon (Unix). Unix has very few entry points compared to Windows, on top of that MacOS sandboxes apps, there is no registry like there is on Windows (Microsofts biggest mistake is the registry and its the prime reason why the OS is so insecure. If they'd get rid of it and use preference files like everyone else that re-write themselves when damaged they'd have less of a malware issue too).

So no OP, you do not need antivirus.

After reading all the awesome posts, i will leave things as they are: no anti-virus needed. Thanks for all the excellent input.
