Remember on a basic level, both your depression and anxiety are just tricks your mind is playing on itself because of the way it is structured and the chemical balances inside.

If this is caused by a chemical imbalance in his brain, then surely this isn't an example of his brain playing tricks on itself. Maybe his mind is functioning normally for it's.....structure (?).

True...but there have been studies that have shown that the chemical balance/structure can be altered by certain thought processes. In some (not all) instances, the brain and behavior are very much the chicken and the egg.

The point is, that while part of the problem may be "hardwired", much more of it is "softwiring" and can probably be corrected through different forms of therapy that attempt to "trick" the mind away from the current state of depression/anxiety back into the "normal" mode of thinking.
