I activated online, got the confirmation email and synced with ITunes but I couldn't make calls. Internet/Wifi etc were all fine, just "no service".

I called ATT and was forwarded 4 times to different people. Everyone said things looked fine online, couldn't figure out why I had no service. I was told all kinds of things like:

-You have an Iphone 4??? How did you get that?? They aren't supposed to ship until tomorrow. (Yes this was from an ATT customer service person)

-You have to call XXX to accept terms of service (even though I did that online)

-You have a bad sim card, take it to an ATT store to get a new one.

-Give it a couple of hours, maybe until tomorrow

FINALLY I got someone who had me go into system settings and reset everything and that worked!

So if you are having trouble with "no service" even after activation confirmation try that.

Just got off the phone with ATT customer care 1-800-331-0500 (from a 2nd line). Looks like the Apple shipped phones have not 'parked' (her term) correctly. The ATT shipped phones all had an insert in their packing box.

Gave her my ICCID then IMEI, rebooted and good to go.

Was her 1st iPhone 4... couldn't believe that. She'll be getting more calls soon!

how is others doing, any issues?

for 600K orders look like activation is went fine, tomorrow is another D-Day!

Mine was taking forever (thru itunes) ... then i shut off my old iphone ... power cycled the new one ... and it was instantly activated

Doing a upgrade swap. Called AT&T, said they swapped everything... plugged it into iTunes and it killed the SIM. Went to AT&T and got new sim and now iTune displays the wrong # even though it's switched around on AT&T's side.

Called Apple who told me to wait 3 days to activate it and then I will have no problem

Anyone else have this issue??

Yes I'm having the same issue. It's been a nightmare. I got the phone this morning in the mail. I connected to itunes to try and activate it and noticed phone number was incorrect but tried using my credentials anyway to activate and that wouldn't work. So I called up Apple support and they told me I had to go into an AT&T store so I drove down to an AT&T store and the people there were clueless. They didn't even have the latest version of iTunes so they couldn't do any activations anyway. They told me to go to an Apple store. One thing that I did notice was that the serial number on the shipping box was different than the serial number on the actual iPhone box so I guess they sent me someone else's phone.

Anyway, so I went an Apple store and they more much more curteous and attentive. I was there for about 3 hours while they were on the phone with AT&T and also Apple tech support trying to get my activation issue resolved. Still no dice. Basically they tried swapping out the SIM card and putting a new one in after calling AT&T and getting it attached to the IMEI number and my account. Tried that a couple different times and everything seemed fine on AT&T's side but when we tried and activate it in iTunes, it was still showing the wrong phone number. Somewhere in some database the IMEI number for the phone is still attached to the wrong number and no one can seem to fix it. Tier 2 Apple support has opened up a support ticket with their Engineering department to see if this can be resolved. Apple store couldn't do a hardware swap because they do not have them in stock yet. I'm hoping to get this resolved tonight since I'm waiting to hear back from Apple support. I'd hate to have to go in tomorrow with all the release madness. *sigh*

Let me know if you get your issue resolved!

Just got my iphone4 this morning. Was the second person in line at the AT&T store in the mall, while the Apple store was a madhouse with 400-500 people in line.

walked into the store at 7am.Over the air activation was not working so they let me leave the store by 7:15.

Tried activiating at www.attwireless.com/activation
got an error message twice
so I just called 1800-331-0500 and went through the voice prompts
turned off my iphone 3gs and iphone 4. turned on the iphone 4 after 5 minutes and it was activated.

Yes! I think this is exactly the issue with mine. Something about the upgrade # being "parked" on the iPhone 4. I talked to 5 different AT&T people for 3 hours and still got nowhere with them.

So was the person able to help you over the phone and did it require iTunes to activate once the AT&T person swapped the IMEI and ICCID #'s.

Right now my IMEI and ICCID #'s have been switched to the iPhone 4 but iTunes recognizes it as the upgrade # so I can't go through activation

I activated mine with iTunes last night but it didn't work. I figured the servers were overloaded so I just went to bed and figured by morning it should be resolved. Nope, this morning "No Service". I tried resetting the network settings, I tried power cycling the phone, I made sure the old 3GS was power cycled (and it says "No Service" now too, so obviously some part of the process worked...).

What finally fixed it is I went toggled airplane mode on, then back off. Immediately got 3G service when I did that.

And try as I may, I don't get any repeatable signal loss no matter how I hold my new iPhone. I get from 1-5 bars at the house on a completely random basis whether I'm holding the phone or it's sitting on my desk.

I had two phones to activate. The one I tried yesterday would not activate using the online method. I had to call the 866-895-1099 number. They had me on hold for quite a while but were able to activate it.

The second phone was activated early this morning. This time the online "att.com/Activations" method worked.

I picked up my reserved phone at the Apple Store at San Diego Fashion Valley. They were doing their part to minimize the impact on ATT, LOL.

They were activating in-store using iTunes, and the in-store and activation process itself was very pleasant. Once you got to the front of the line, a sales associate would meet you at the door and walk you back to a waiting area, asked what phone you wanted, went and got it, took your credit card, came back again (lots of exercise for the employees!), then walked you over to the activation area and did the activation.

I was told (apparently erroneously) that activation would take "up to an hour", but that some people's phones were activated "as soon as they walk out of the store and get a good signal".

I walked around the mall for a bit, but no dice. I returned to the store and asked. I was reassured that it would eventually activate.

Several hours later, no activation.

Read some posts here, decided to do a full reboot, and it instantly activated.

Would have saved a lot of people a lot of grief if they had just rebooted customer's phones, and/or suggested a re-re-boot if it didn't work. They were apparently telling everyone to just walk away and it would take care of itself. They were consistent about this, as the guy at the door told me the same thing when I came back to complain.
