I'm interested in Apple TV but I'm not interested in the $230+ price tag. I see refurb units on the apple store site. Anyone with experience with these? Safe buy or should I wait until the mysterious new apple TV may or may not be revealed?

Safe in what way? It still comes with a years warrenty like a new one. It's basically one that Apples had back for repair or some other reason and they fixed it and cleaned it up like new.
As to weather to wait nobody knows when or if there will be a new model so its really up to you.

Recently purchased a MacBook Pro & AirPort Extreme on Apple's refurb site. Saved a bundle. AirPort stopped working after 2 months and Apple replaced it overnight under warranty. MacBook Pro is working great. I'm also considering buying a refurb Apple TV but I may wait to see what the rumored new one has to offer. Apple refurbs are the way to go. You can even purchase AppleCare for them.
