All the images so far show the new CarPlay across multiple screens as it'll appear in cars exposing the proper APIs for instrumentation and climate control. But what about the infotainment-only display we're so familiar with?

Does it change from what we've got now in any way (for instance, are the icons at the bottom of the screen as in the previews?) or is it the same as in iOS 15?

Nope. Nothing new in CarPlay … sadly

Well, except for gray text in turn and eta panels in third party nav apps.

Alerter panel is now too large and image icon is above the text. Blue and red buttons in the panels are brighter.

These all seem bugs at this stage.

I also had hoped for the option of a landscape CarPlay simulation on your iPhone for those that don't own a car with CarPlay support as is the case with my end 2013 Toyota (that does have a full size 8 inch screen) btw the 2015 version of my car model did have an expensive option to make it CarPlay ready.

Not even a new wallpaper.

I'm honestly surprised that we can't specify our own custom wallpapers. I don't care that much for the existing ones, so I just use the blank white/dark one. Lately, I've started leaving CarPlay in dark-always mode (with maps still auto switching).

The current CarPlay implementation isn't bad. I guess the changes mostly are intended for climate display and the like, so they aren't needed on the infotainment screen. Good to know that map waypoints will be added to the CarPlay display, though.

One thing I would like to see would be a way to display incorrect speed limits. Over the weekend, I encountered a long stretch of interstate with the speed limit set to 45 mph in CarPlay (and not 70 mph), probably a holdover from long-completed construction, and there's no option to report that.

I would really like to customize the dashboard. I don't need the calendar on there at all. I would like to see either weather or the new Home lock screen widget on there. Or nothing at all except Maps and Music.

You can hide a lot of the apps from CarPlay if you go into CarPlay's section of Settings. Weather isn't currently an allowed category in CarPlay, but it looks like that's changing in iOS 16, since some of the previews have showed a weather forecast.

The overview display tries to be smart about what to show. For me, sometimes, it's my next appointment if I have one coming up soon. If I'm close to home, it presents a button for the garage door that shows its current status. But sometimes it's just the map, a Go Home button, and Now Playing. (I have Siri suggestions turned off for the navigation).

Maybe if you disable the calendar for CarPlay, it won't show up on the overview.

Maps has shown weather alerts along a route since last Summer. Severe weather issues that is…

On right hand drives, the infographic display featuring directions etc is now located on the left hand side, as opposed to the right.

Really sucks that they made it a big bullet point for how there's a BRAND NEW CARPLAY EXPERIENCE, and then gut punch us with this pie-in-the-sky maybe someday in 5 years future BS that requires buying a brand new car. Yeah that looks cool, but none of us will actually ever see this anytime soon. How about some updates for the thing everyone already is using?

The whole sales pitch for CarPlay is that it's supposed to be able to be updated independent of the actual car software, which the manufacturers never update, then Apple just basically leaves it alone and never updates it -_-

Tried disabling calendar but it still showed up. I work from home, my items in the calendar are deadlines for projects, not something that I have physically attend. I don't need to see them when in the car.

Hm, try in Carplay settings (while in your car, on the car's screen) turning off "suggestions in dashboard".

That's got to be a bug. I live in an LHD country (I'm in the US) but I've seen plenty of pictures online showing the display layout mirror imaged in RHD cars. Send in a report; I'd be very surprised to not see it fixed later on.

It's frustrating for me too, but this is one of those cases where the hardware and/or the APIs needed just aren't installed in existing cars. We won't even know what vehicles will support it for over a year; my guess is that we'll start seeing this in new model generations and in major facelifts, like the original CarPlay was.

Thankfully, we are getting to the point where CarPlay is basically a necessity for a new model, and over time full customization (with exceptions to be sure that required displays and indicators are included) will become the norm.

The option to add stops on your route is on CarPlay.
Yep, this is cool!
What's annoying however is that adding a stop doesn't let me choose a favorite location, which I use all the time to set the first stop. Hopefully this is something we'll get some time...

I thought Podcasts app was improved for Carplay w/ iOS 16. Something about now being able to get to latest episodes. Currently (i'm not on iOS 16 yet) you can't do much in the carplay podcasts app.
