I have successfully shared files from my iMac to my MacBook via OS X settings and Finder in the past. However, that was having both systems connected to the same Wi-Fi Network.

Is there a simple and straightforward way of doing the same but 1) using my iPad instead of a MacBook to view my files, and 2) having both systems in different locations? I need to both access those files and manage them (renaming, moving, etc.)

iCloud or Dropbox or google drive or Microsoft cloud. Any ️ storage for that matter will suffice for your requirements.

Oh no. I already have hundreds of GB on my iMac and I want to access those files remotely. Copying those to a server like Dropbox doesn't seem to be an option even if it was possible (which isn't because I don't have a business account).

You can probably achieve that by using VPN. Try googling something like "ipad access files over vpn". You will need some kind of VPN file browsing app on your iPad.

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network, which is common method of setting up secure connections over insecure networks (such as Internet).
