I have searched Cydia but I can't find anything that offers similar functionality. I don't want to pirate it but it would be nice to be able to create WiFi hotspots on the go.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

go for TetherMe instead... bluetooth based, supports multiple clients, works well for me

Not really what the OP asked, or even comparable, what if the device you want to tether doesn't have Bluetooth?? anyways...

@OP there is not FREE (or paid, really) alternative for Mywi, and doubt anyone is going to program that level of software for free. However a program that allow you to create a mobile hotspot for up to 8 devices for a 1 time payment of $20 is really not that bad.

Seriously... Just buy it... it's so worth it. I have unlimited data and have used it for over 30gb of data this month no problem. I use it to stream netflix and hulu from my macbook pro to my 46" HDTV. I also have it installed on my ipad, and surprisingly it doesn't even destroy the battery on it. Best 20 bucks I've ever spent on an app!

TetherMe :)

It's only $2 instead of $20 and like another user said uses bluetooth. Very fast, no worrying with wifi (which saves your computer some battery).

Also you can still create a wifi hotspot using your computer if you want to share it with others.

try pdanet

the free version is relatively unrestricted (you can't access secured website after the 12 days trial) and it seems alot less bloated than mywi

TetherMe... $1.99 and works like a champ. All you have to do in plug in phone via USB and wala, you get a charged phone and tethering. I tried mywi trial and was not getting good signal at all for some reason...

stop being cheap bastards

mobile wifi ftw

if you dont need that then use tetherme = enables native tethering

neither option is free but both work very well

do you need to have itunes installed on your pc to use tetherme?

I have tried mywi and pdanet, and both do a great job, but since it's only myself ever going to use it..and rarely at that (only once in the last 6 months for example), I'd prefer the cheaper USB option

however, the laptop I use when I'm travelling, doesn't have itunes installed.

To answer the OP directly:

There are no free MyWi alternatives that offer the same functionality.

MyWi is one program that I don't hesitate to buy because the alternative is so much more expensive and limiting that the cost doesn't really matter.

some one who can afford a iphone + phone service every month... should be able to spend $20 .

and this is worth $20 for sure !

Yea I tried to get out of paying for it and ended up having to rejailbreak from scratch. repo.woowiz.net...yea right!

i'm going to second this. i use pdanet for the occasional hotspot, and it always does what i need it to, and i'm just using the free version.

Just my opinion, but put my money on MiWi. No other app does WiFi tethering. A lot of people like to complain about the pricetag, which is something I never understood. It costs $20 per month to get tethering from AT&T... and that's for single-device tethering! MiWi is one-time $20, and turns your phone into a damn wifi hotspot.

Been using MiWi for over a year now, every time I re-jailbreak it's the first app I get. :D

Yes, you will need to have iTunes installed on the computer u want to tether to.

The alternative to paying for MyWi is getting it for free. Just like you are getting AT&T's tethering service for free.

How well does TetherMe work? Is it the same as commcenter hacking?

I like Miwi...except for it destroys battery life, and heats up the phone quite a bit.

As I understand it, TetherMe is effectively CommCenter hacking in a nice little Cydia package.

I don't understand why this logic makes any sense. I could afford to eat out every night but I don't because it isn't worth it.

Same reason that I don't buy MyWi, is it nice? Sure, is it worth $20? Not in my opinion, so I don't buy it. I also don't pirate it. Why is everyone so intensely against trying to find a more cost effective solution.

There are a lot of people like myself that might use tethering once a month. It would be nice to have tethering available but it isn't really a big deal if I don't have it. If you needed tethering every day for a job or something that is completely different then being on the road 1 day and thinking it would be nice to pull out the laptop and have internet.

I don't think that anyone is "intensely against trying to find a more cost effective solution", I understand and respect your opinion about mywi, but MyWi is a program with not competition first at all, all other program out there are NOT mobile hotspot, second, if anyone decided to expend the time to code a program to the same level as MyWI it will not release it for free, it will required a lot of dedication and work.

I agree we need more programs like it, competition is always a good thing. :D

The closest thing the OP wants is PDAnet. I will tether one device on wifi. When the 14 day trial is over you're able to still visit web sites but you can't go to any secure ones. ie - no online banking or shopping.

Weigh your choice out.
