Any free text app that uses your regular phone number?

I'm a complete newb to the iPhone, and I tried doing a search but couldn't find anything definitive.

If not, what would you guys recommend as the best free texting app (pricing aside)? TextNow?

Whatsapp is better. But now iMessage is even better.

The app was free for a limited time a few months ago, and I told all my friends with a text plan to get it so we could text each other for free.

iMessage works only for IOS5 devices.

I used TextNow on my iPod occasionally, When my Regular phone would die, Or there would be a problem.
Petty good texting app.
